Yeah it doesn't affect me that much. I started this grind so I could play games, and boy have I been playing games. I started FFI a few days before that happened (playing it all day after work may have contributed to my forgetfulness that day), and finished FFIV this morning before work. I'll start V later today.
Being able to mostly understand fbk and the rest of Gamers is just a bonus, since I started grinding ~5 months before I started watching livestreaming chuubas. Though I do still regret completely falling away from chuubas in early-mid 2018, probably a month or two before fbk debuted. Lack of browsing /jp/ had them completely disappear from my radar for a couple of years, even with the occasional clip posted in IRC late 2019 onwards.
Ah well, life goes on.

For me, it was a combination of both. I had been wanting to start learning it for games (and to a lesser extent anime) for a long time but could never really get into it until I discovered live stream Vtubers either. I used to watch a lot of Kizuna Ai in the early days (and later on and off) too, it was easy because there were community subtitles available for a lot of her content, but live streams were always a bit intimidating for me because I'd understand nothing so I never really bothered. I think it only took me a week or two of trying to watch them before I seriously started learning because I realized I'd been missing out, and shortly thereafter I got into FBK and never stopped. I'm notoriously bad at starting and not finishing games and picking them up again months later, so I haven't finished all that many in Japanese, but I definitely play a lot of them, I don't think I played any game in English for like 2.5 years or so. I plan to go through most of the FF games eventually too, the only one I played in Japanese so far is FF14 and I'm about to hit the latest expansion in that one (only took me like 2 years..). They are definitely great games to mine vocabulary in, a great mix of simple/everyday and complex/obscure vocabulary.

Apparently the aquarium game is getting a windows release if anyone here wants to play it for fubuki but doesn't have a ps4/switch, I believe it said it'll also have an english release. I was trying to see if I can get it running for the upcoming live but it's not even letting me run the program for having CheatEngine installed, and it insists I still do even after having uninstalled and removed any trace of it. I just took a superficial look at the files and here's my conclusion: Don't expect too much. Big announcement and high system requirements but in the end it's just another Unity app. I've seen the same scheme in Hololy (the Android app for selfies with Holos). It's still in the beginning and doesn't look very sophisticated yet. They're mentioning 80 GB disk space as minimum requirement. They're currently at 1.4 GB. But mostly it's a toy or sandbox app with some basic functionality. I don't think there will anything sophisticated. It's more like one of these "X Simulator" games with bad physics and outdated animation. But what would I expect when Cover claims that it's a metaverse? Get onboard become a pyramid and chat, watch Videos, buy stuff, and run around... like levitating? Maybe the biggest thing would be a real virtual presence in concerts but I have a feeling that it's a thing that might come years in the future. It's really VRChat in worse but powered by Holos and that's why people still "play" it

Maybe it's something simple you can do with Unity. I would expect they fear that someone really disturbs the experience. I don't have faith that the security and protection system is going to be sophisticated. Send corrupt packages to crash the servers, gain access to things you should not have (turn lights on during a show) or do the usual 4chan trolling. Or you simply do some data mining and retrieve some internals. Anything might be possible.

I'm not sure if you can compare this to the first one, this seems like more of an actual thing while the first one was just a trial run. The first one was two random Holomen doing two or three songs on a neutral stage without goods and I don't think there was even a paid option. This one has been shilled for months, has a real theme, twice as many performers (who have actual synergy), tons of goods and you could buy a streaming ticket. If they want HoloEarth concerts to be viable in the long run, this one matters a lot.

Thanks for looking into it, that's more or less what I expected. I have my doubts that it will ever become something that resembles an actual game, I think its main purpose will just be a platform to watch these concerts from different angles (like you said, basically Concert Simulator) and make a shit ton of money with these absurdly prices in-game purchases. The demo for the game part they showed last year (?) didn't look much better than any of those early-acess asset flip games that never end up going anywhere either, so I don't expect much of it. At this point, I feel like this is still just a proof of concept (not anywhere near close to a beta version) and this concert will be the first real test to see if this is viable to actually do anything with for them. I'm really curious how they are going to handle thousands upon thousands of viewers at the same time, I just hope they had enough foresight to get proper server infrastructure and at least instance everything because there's no way this thing can handle all viewers in one area. I have my doubts they did, though. Let's hope for the best, I'd be pretty annoyed if this thing ruined FBK's concert.

Can confirm, I've done some messing around and it doesn't run under Wine/Proton. I got it installed on my laptop which I still have a Windows partition on, and it appears there is a handler to open an SSO page on that "press any button" initial screen. That handler is either not implemented or not supported under Wine. I liked it overall but it could have really used another 10 minutes so that they could have added at least one or two of their actual unit songs, that was sort of disappointing. I'm sure they could have found a way to involve Miko in them somehow. I loved that they rearranged all the songs to fit into the eastern theme, it gave the whole thing a great atmosphere. The new song was pretty good, too! I just wish they would have given Fubuki some more camera attention. I feel like whenever everyone got a close up, half the time Fubuki got a far shot instead, that was pretty annoying.

But I have a better understanding now. It was misunderstood as MMORPG but it's actually a VRChat clone. Here's another way how to monetize it. Really fascinating how they would personalize the experience for every viewer. I can just repeat: It doesn't feel like a good app in terms of sophisticated features but they implemented at least some bare minimum to use it. They don't need all the stuff VRChat provides. It really gives me Ragnarok Online vibes. The game had a terrible UI and was full of workarounds compared to the other games such as World of Warcraft or EVE Online but I was still able to enjoy it.

They have been really unclear what HoloEarth actually is, I don't think they actually know themselves and are still experimenting. I think at first they wanted it to be an MMO (and showed some painfully generic crafting survival gameplay demo), but now they have realized how big of a challenge that is and that there's just as much money (if not more) in a mere concert simulator with in-app purchases. I'm sure they will add more features to it over time, but I think from here on out these concerts will be the main focus. They are a lot cheaper to make than IRL concerts (especially given the fact they now have state-of-the-art studios made for this specific purpose which further minimizes the costs) and tons of talent, so they could in theory hold one of these every single months and rack in loads of cash, either from people buying the merchandise, people buying the in-app purchases or from those that choose to buy a ticket instead. The individualized lanterns are pretty ingenious, too, I agree. They found a way to make "everyone" feel special by having their oshi carry their message for an outrageous fee even if she herself never even get to see it. I'm not sure if I like it from an ethical point of view but I'm sure this will make people much more likely to buy these kind of messages. Overall, this seems like a pretty lucrative business model going forward, they just need to improve their server infrastructure.

I won't discuss how greedy Cover is. Their licensing fee pretty cheap stuff are exorbitant. The quality seems to be good but they compete with greedy corpos such as FIFA. It's hairsplitting but I think their term "Metaverse" fits better. Probably because a metaverse overlaps with the definition of MMO. You're really in a world of Hololive and just Hololive, but I don't think that the engagement in some kind of adventure is the focus here. Honestly I could care less about cover's ethnics as long as it's standard company greed bullshit. Gacha games are some of the most predatory things out there and yet a lot of people rave for a hololive gacha game despite the fact it is guaranteed to be overpriced, if people want to eat up the things cover puts out then they can continue to do so. The only thing that really matters to me is the talents themselves and so far Fubuki seems pretty cool and caring about her community and thats enough for me. As long as they don't fuck over the talents then people will be fine with them.

I sort of agree with both of you. A lot of their strategies aren't the greatest, but I don't mind the current state of affairs because as it is right now, you can enjoy 95%+ of all Holocontent without spending a single cent if you so desire. Yeah, the goods are overpriced with ginormous profit margins and offering them in limited amounts/during a limited time frame is an exploitative tactic targeting the fear of missing out (Fubuki also seems annoyed by this because she keeps saying she wants to reissue certain goods but always says it is "difficult" i.e. it seems like management doesn't want her to do this), but in the end, it is still free entertainment. I choose to buy goods or concert tickets occasionally because it's a way for me to support Fubuki and some of the stuff is pretty nice. The first year or two of following this hobby I had less money, so I didn't spend anything except for the FBK membership (which during that time didn't offer much content at all anyway) and I didn't really feel like I was missing anything.
They've become a bit more daring lately with the HoloEarth in-app purchases and the main channel locking a lot of its content featuring all members behind a high-tier membership paywall, but I hope it doesn't escalate too much. But then again, I am seeing this from the lens of a Sukonbu, and Fubuki seems very aware of these issues and doesn't really encourage people to spend beyond their means (or at all, really) and treats us all equally for the most part. She even seemed momentarily kind of shocked at how much this currency actually costs during her stream yesterday ( https://youtu.be/Ch4C16BZyJ8?t=1924 ). She probably assumed 1 coin costs 1 yen, but it's twice as expensive.
Anyway, my point is, cover isn't the greatest, but they could be so much worse. They seem to treat their talent decent enough and could easily be exploiting us SO much more than they are at present, and I'm glad Fubuki herself doesn't pressure her Sukonbu.

I'm really not that invested into this hobby that I would buy everything. I really questioned what kind of stuff I'm actually watching. Sometimes it feels like a children's show in terms of humor but then the salacious bits show up. It makes me wonder. I really don't know how Fubuki got me hooked initially. I really had a reluctance to VTubers. I got sucked into this world like many other people and now I'm here. Following the development of several individuals and a company - I must admit - I'm envious of. It was explained before how they shovel in money with medium effort. I can really hope that the talents get the majority of it because they are the drivers of their community and they have so much more on their daily schedules besides daily (!) streams. I'm still concerned how many Holos got mental and physical issues. Even if the magic would get lost: I would like to read from some EN holo about the business practices and internals of Cover in a few years. I love this fox and I can relate to her. I do what I think will help her.

Yeah, I barely even watch the main channel content at all so I don't really care, but the intention behind that has to be that they want everyone to member both their oshi and the main channel if they want to see all the content, but I doubt it's working on a lot of people. Anyway, the girls certain don't get anywhere near the majority of the money, but I'm fairly confident that they earn enough to live very comfortably, so that's reassuring enough. I think in most other companies (and for most independents), this is more of a side gig for the majority of the talents, whereas here it is the main source of income for all but a few of them. As for the mental health thing, I do find it concerning, but we are talking about a bunch of young women that are all eccentric in a variety of ways (or else this wouldn't be there job), so it's kind of a given. If anything, I find it somewhat reassuring that they acknowledge these issues and don't seem to have any problems with letting their talent take months long hiatuses because of it, Japan usually doesn't seem to be very understanding in this regard. But yeah, in the end, this all doesn't really matter all that much as long as our fox is happy with the situation and continues to do what we love her for - hopefully for a very long time.

Are you sure? As far as I understood and interpreted they have talent contracts. What they do is mostly their thing. Maybe there are just some obligatory events or activities they must participate like the big concerts. I think Ayame is a good example. There was a time when even on /vt/ it was a meme that she wasn't streaming. I don't know if she ever said what was the reason for the long breaks between the streams. But she's still constantly delivering. Usually streaming platforms expect a certain amount of hours streamed per month by their partners. But actually it is not very strictly enforced.
I think, it's fine to say they need a break but the consequences on the public side shouldn't be underestimated. Haachama is on hiatus since 5 months by now. Mio is sick every now and then and often has issues with her throat. Korone danced with a broken leg (iirc) and too a break last year. And who knows what's going on with Gura? She basically said all her life is Hololive about a year ago. Of course there are other characters that seem to withstand the stress quite well. Koyori still has a massive output in hours streamed. I guess since her 3D debut a year ago she got too busy to keep all things up at that pace. But she released a good amount of cover songs and 3 original solo songs. These songs seem to be a good amount of work. Cover probably requires them to release their first song very soon after the debut but everything else is extra or part of a collaboration. But on Fubuki's side we all know she's doing a lot in the background and participates in a lot activities. I believe she's very busy everyday but she loves what she does and does it in the right pace. So I hope she can do it much longer until she graduates from active VTubing and gets "promoted" to a similar role as A-Chan has or becomes a coach/manager. At least I believe she would become some kind of alumni who occurs as special guest every sometimes. Sad to think about it is inevitable in (hopefully) far future.pre
