JP universities are notoriously easy as shit and near impossible to fail unless you just don't show up to exams.
There's quite a lot of articles from foreign professors that taught in Japanese higher education and how much of a culture shock it was. The gist of it is that as long as you actually get into the school you are good and can slack off not making any effort whatsoever and your professors are still expected to let you graduate with honors so the workforce has lots of new "highly skilled" graduates every year. They have shitloads of pressure from the boards to keep graduation rates as high as possible, failing even a single student is already a huge negative mark on a prof's record.

I remember Tokyo U, the probably most prestigious school in Nippon, had less than 5% drop out rate back when they released statistics a few years ago. It's pretty fucked up.
I don't know how high it is in the US or other countries, but the uni I went to here in Germany had well over 90% since they filter the fuck out of everyone that doesn't make an effort especially in the first few semesters.
