I used Opera since version 8.5. What the fuck did you use Unite for? Was that not the home server thing they had. I didn't find it that bad, pretty ignorable even if so. Could have been useful had I known to tinker with it back then. When it got pretty bad was the change to Chromium abandoning all the features I loved. Sync is still fucking worse than before the switch. Still can't get to abandoning it though.

It isn't so much a corpo in the usual sense, but more like a shill mascot vtuber position for some company product (Opera GX "gaming browser" in this case), like Crunchyroll's Hime, etc. But yeah, realistically prospects are grim, as these kinds of mascot vtuber projects usually don't amount to much and flounder.

I used Opera back ages ago in the dark period at the tail end of IE's reign and before Chrome(ium) became the new defacto standard.
It was a decent browser at the time, or at least I remember no issues, but yeah nowadays with most of everything being just a chromium reskin trying to differentiate itself with useless features I don't need, what's the point..

This is far from the first random company that decides to launch a mascot vtuber project, and as for what they are "thinking"? It's probably something like this, some younger employee in the marketing department really likes vtubers and always wanted to play producer, so he convinces the stuffy old exec suits that this would be a totally viable strategy to reach the kids and show them how hip and cool we are, and because they are out of touch and don't know any better, they give him some campaign budget and let him do his thing for a while, at least until the money runs out and they actually take a look at how little results it brought in and the whole project gets dropped again.

I was kind of hoping it would have taken off to break the social media services that sadly took over.
It didn't. It was fucking awful.
I'd have expected they would have had some sort of distributed P2P model for it so sites could be shared even when the host is offline. It didn't work like that at all, it was direct hosting and slow as fuck on so many sites.
