One thing I kind of hate about VTubers is the ones who go out of their way to put on a fake voice make it hard for the ones who are, in fact, using their real voices but because VTubers with fake voices exist, people assume they aren't. They think "When they're using a deep voice, that must be their real voice" and that's usually not even true. The fake voice ones have ruined people's trust for the ones who use their real voice and actually do just have a naturally cute voice.

I don't even get why they find it funny. Like even if the vtuber is a man, does it matter when he's entertaining? It seems like the whole joke is "Haha you're actually watching a man, gay" or something.
Like I know a shit ton of people HERE on /vt/ are in "KILL ALL MEN" mode and do hate anyone who watches men. But those are people who ostensibly actually watch vtubers. So I don't think they're on the same wavelength.

among other things it's a seiyuu improv gig. for me personally the voice acting is an important part (which is why i hate TTS and goXLR stuff)
the difference is that somehow people like you perceive the acting as 'fake' in a hobby that as originated from acting, which to me again seems kind of idiotic.

Because fleshtubing culture doesn’t provide any incentive to put on a fake voice. Sure, it’s possible, but there’s no benefit to doing it. This isn’t a criminal trial, the stakes aren’t that high. So yes, it’s safe to assume that’s their real voice. Because on the tiny off-chance you’re wrong, it doesn’t fucking matter anyway.

Because audiences use more familiar forms of entertainment as frames of references when they’re introduced to vtubers. EN has a strong fleshtubing culture. JP does not. The frame of reference for JP viewers is anime, the frame of reference for EN viewers is fleshtubing. Therefore, a lot of EN viewers think not using your natural voice is weird and unnatural and cringe.
For the record, I don’t agree with those people at all. I don’t really care if a vtuber decides to use their natural voice if they want, but for the majority of JPs I’ve heard use both, I prefer their “fake” voice.
