You get to look past their circumstances, status, and physical traits and you get to convey who they truly are. Those circumstances, statuses and physical traits aren't merely window dressing though, they can help reflect why the person is the way they are and what kind of environment their personality operates in.
It's a fun balance, and writing as a medium is suited for it, since you're permitted to take the time to portray their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a way that a thousand pictures of them could only ever hint at
