Part of it is a monkey see/monkey do thing with their trying to keep up with each other, sort of like how twitch indies have specific things/-isms they lean on and the bigger corpos have their own meta. That horse girl making like fucking 70k off a single donothon (and then quitting immediately) is kind of all the proof both the company and the girl needs that it's a good idea.

As to why donothons, I think it's because small corpos are basically just-big enough that they suspect they may have at least a few whale fans by now so wanna see if they can get them to go all-in. They also have usually relatively tiny-tiny sub counts relative to the big corpos yet often can be like 3view status (even a few 4views), so I suspect their membership numbers aren't much because they don't get a free 200k subs just for existing and the pool of members out of like 50k subs is just not gonna be the same as having a mil+ like the big girls. So without that their income probably is not very stable or predictable stream to stream and both they and the corpo are interested in seeing how much they can actually pull in.

Regardless I do find it a pretty scummy kind of stream, maybe even worse than react content as far as worthiness goes. It's literally "just give us money faggots." But I do see why they do it.

I’m not attached enough to the vtubers I like to pay money for them to stay. I know plenty of other people are willing to do that, so I won’t. I can survive without vtubers. I only spend money on things that are illegal to acquire for free (and that are easy to get caught; of course I pirate anime). Why spend money when you don’t have to?
