I'm in favour of bringing back public executions. Normally we'd go with hangings at the gallows in the west, but stoning works too. I'm ambivalent so long as the job gets done. I always vote for whoever I think is most likely to result in public executions being restarted.

Public executions should be violent and look painful for maximum deterrent effect. Stoning in particular has the advantage of the community actively participating in the killing, ingraining it in their brains how real it is and how they themselves definitely don't want the community turning on them for breaking the law. It's probably the most effective method in terms of maximising the deterrent effect on potential future criminals. Being harsh here will result in less crime and punishment overall.
