Most vtubers are pretty mediocre entertainers, livestreams are better suited to that as some people are more content to use them as background noise and for others the live interaction brings a stronger parasocial bond. Few if any could actually make a living doing this if they weren't streaming.

because making youtube videos hasn't been the most profitable way to make content online for a long time. Ad revenue sucks ass and it's harder to milk fans for donos without the interactive element. More work; less money

Vtubers from 2017-2018 did that. Meta was then shifted to live stream, because a lot of fags complained about 20mins clip videos were too scripted and lack of genuineness. They wanted genuine vtubers who would interact with them, and care about them with all their hearts and souls.

Zero effort compared to actually making a fucking video. Also you will get leechers and make more money than you by simply making a reaction video and you can't take it down because of youtube stupid policy.
