I thought a pickme was just a girl who rather than creating a character out of her own creative impulses she purposely chose one with the intention of selling it to his/her target demographic

Pickme describes women who grovel before men that no woman could possibly want, because unable to get at men that women could possibly want. It's assumed that even the pickme herself doesn't really want the kind of men she targets. Much is implied here, but largely unsaid, about what any woman in her right mind could genuinely want in a man.
