i have a feeling that the launcher direct linked to itchio fileserver CDN or whatever and gave them something along the lines of a DDoS due to the popularity of HoloCure that it became a potential security risk, either becauce itchio cheaped out or there's some sort of vulnerability to exploit that they can't patch or desperately want no one to know about.
Either way, Steam with a STANDALONE DOWNLOAD option for the paranoid types is the way to go.
