Not all fruits seem to be sentient. We see midget apple eating a normal non-sentient apple with little trouble (https://youtu.be/6iKeOP72hTo skip to 4:05). There was no distinct scream to be heard from the normal sized apple.

It is probably hunger and the drive to eat. The only difference we can tell from sentient produce from non-sentient produce is the lack of drive or inability of the latter to eat. All sentient beings must eat to stay alive. If you do not eat for an extended period of time, you are generally dead or in the process of dying. Corpses are definitely not sentient.

We have seen time and time again that it is generally frowned upon to eat a fellow produce regardless if it is sentient or not especially if it is from the same specie(?) of produce. This creates a strange contradiction to midget apple eating a non-sentient normal sized apple as he also refused to eat apple sauce due to the fact that he is an apple (8:24 same video).

It is my theory that food for produce is running low in the kitchen. We have seen the main cast eat their fellow produce with little qualms while the others watch in horror (https://youtu.be/UqNLfoSevSw).). Eating a mashed corpse bathed in blood of another with sliced corpses served as hors d'oeuvre is truly a terrifying sight. There is no heaven or hell in the kitchen. There is only a belly waiting to be filled.
