It really is a mediocre IP extremely hard carried by talented but bizarrely obsessive fans while the original owner is getting massive publicity and becoming filthy rich in the process, with the money of the same fans, for comparatively little effort.
There's big differences though:
One was/is a quirky dork indie developer in the soulful japanese wild west internet era who took years to get there and did all the original games, godly music and designs.
The others is a group of normie e-girls pretending to be anime characters for otaku simps money who get rich 3 months in, commissioned everything from their models, backgrounds, illustrations, songs, choreography...; and 95% of what they do is literally play (badly) the videogames made by others and shill sponsors.

At its peak, Zun was ACCELERATING with at least one new game a year, with at least another side project or music CD alongside it. Despite going so fast though, he maintained a decent level of quality unlike some other accelerating black companies.

Kancolle is the biggest waste of a franchise. The first anime, and the (long-delayed) Vita game killed the momentum, and the devs barely put effort into the game. The only update they did is because Adobe killing Flash, so they need to update the game to HTML5. Even GBF have English translation, while Kancolle does not have an actual app, and no English translation.

Used to play with FGO with Kancolle too, and even though FGO devs can be slow, at least they do try to improve the game or make new things, unlike Kancolle's.

Kancolle is currently still alive, but that's because it barely took money in the first place. Low maintenance so even scraps of money (by popular game franchise standards) can sustain the game
