Japanese and English are fundamentally different languages and what works for one stylistically doesn't translate well to the other. I can't speak for what works in Japanese but with English thumbnails readability is key above all else. A lot of text is just going to bog things down. If you really want to try it, just remember to look at your thumbnail scaled down to, well, thumbnail size before publishing. Make sure it translates well at any size it'll get seen at.

I have a suspicion that Japanese computer users either run their monitors at lower resolutions or zoom in significantly closer than what would seem normal for an English speaking computer users. I'll ask if you're offering, I've been trying to mix short covers, I want to do one a day and upload them as youtube shorts. I'm using Reaper as my DAW, I only know basic filters from OBS experience.

How do you recommend getting the instrumental? Right now I'm ripping them off youtube. Karaoke versions of songs always seem low quality, is there a filter I could apply to make them "pop" a little bit more?

And do you have a tutorial series you would recommend that focuses on recording vocals, treating them and using effects? I'm mostly doing rock and J-Pop, and most of what I find when googling focuses too much on composing instrumentals, I don't know how to search.

If possible, don't. Most of the "higher quality stuff" there will be at 128kpbs and that's compressed as hell compared to say, what you'd get off iTunes or modern streaming services (that's Spotify free's starting point). While YT supports 256 kbps, it's far from the usual for uploads.

Very often people record covers and would be happy to collab. Hit up other creatives for permission, many will be happy to provide stems or wav files.

If you're using Karaoke versions, you should probably get them from lossless sources or higher quality than YouTube. I'd suggest trying SoulSeek, you can find a lot of high quality Japanese releases there.

You can always try to EQ specific areas and use light compression for that, but ideally you'd be working with the best source files you can get instead.

Assuming the performance is good, pitch-correction will be minimal (but not unnecessary); compression and light reverb will be your biggest allies. As for tutorials, you're probably not going to get one that gives you a recipe for what you're looking for; rather than that, you should probably look into general tutorials for mixing vocals and then pay attention to what is most different between the mixing in the tracks you like versus what you were taught how to do. For example, it's very common to have a lot of long reverb in Western music vocals, but that's not the case at all in J-Rock/Pop because the mixes are busy enough that they don't need to"fill it up". Also, the vocals tend to go for "brightness/sharpness" a lot more than "mellowness".

Mixing-wise, a small degree of saturation/distortion will help but if the performance is good enough, compression alone should do the trick. Vocal performance-wise, always stay hydrated, project the voice forward and remember the screamo trick:diaphragm pushing leads to air coming out as power: using your throat too harshly leads mostly to pain. Voice Actors can do yells for a long time without hurting their throats because of stuff like this.

AKG P220s are excellent and around that price range, but if I'm completely honest, you can get by just fine with a generic USB-based BM800 from China. The room, placement, performance and mixing will matter way more than the price point of the mic and the cheap alternatives came along very nicely in recent times.

I use an SM58 and the dry vocals are surprisingly clean compared to my other condenser mic. I've saved your post, I'll keep it in mind, I still need to improve the performance especially the singing in time.

You probably shouldn't need to have the gain all the way up in your interface. There's a big chance you're clipping at that stage and the limiter is just adding another layer of clipping. I can't give you specific advice before hearing an audio clip, but a limiter is really the last defense against audio volume being too loud and you probably will be better off looking into compression. I know I'm saying this a lot, but evening out volume to get rid of the biggest peaks really is the ticket to sounding more "professional", for the lack of a better term.

Obssessed with analog chorus and amp-in-a-box type pedals; I like the sound of cranked everything and that's not good for urban environments, so I go and test out any and every headphone or direct to mixer solution for big tones. So far, my favorites are by far the SansAmp GT2 and Mooer 005 in that category, but I have been considering switching to a more in-the-box approach for commission work due to reamping and redoing takes being the biggest time-drains during gigs; for chorus, I tried a bunch of stuff before find the perfect sound in a pink label CE-5, that I end up using even with synthesizers. I'll buy basically any Chinese pedal I see and find excuses to use them in tracks.

That can be fixed with better posture and a little training, but compression can be used to lift up the overall volume as well. It's just that once something clips, you can't "bring it back down unclipped" and due to the nature of how digital audio works, those results are far from desirable, while in the analog realm, some degree of going over gets chalked up as "character".

Oh cool, I always wondered how good those little box mooers were. I have the same kinda set up of cranked pedals + audio interface so I was always interested but never got them. I cycle through a shit ton of dirt myself because of how well pedals retain value.

If you want to switch things up and if you haven't already, I suggest trying to mix with VSTs only. I tried tons of reverb + delay pedals before I found out I just liked to mix with my DAW reverbs instead. I sold an echosystem and an el cap becuase neither of them were better then abbey chambers.

Absolutely, for reverb and delay I've been using ITB stuff for a while; not only it's easier to change things, modern computers can handle a lot more than they did back in the day and long convolution reverb as well as programmable ones are not only viable, but work better than a lot of physical units would in some aspects. I'm crazy about the Eventide plugins.

Did not see anything that caught my attention. However, the VST version of the Line6 Helix, Helix Native, has a beautiful Arion's SCH-Z emulation and that's very much in the ballpark.

I spent my teenage years listening to 80s music and 90s Visual Kei bands, so I'm very picky about chorus. Nothing quite hits like the CE series, and the last ones that get the sounds I needed were the pink label CE-5s, right before they switched to digital. So close to the CE-2 they could fool people on a blind test.

DC-2W will definitely get you there. The Waza series has been pretty great. Regarding VSTs, I didn't like the Arturia one much, real CPU hog and the sound doesn't feel right.

Collabs among 1 views almost always feels very awkward. Not saying collabs are not a beneficial thing to do but usually viewership for them is awful since your audience at that level generally watches you to have an intimate chat experience with you as a streamer and that is almost always lost during collabs. At the end of the day, most of the benefits of collabs can be obtained more simply by just raiding each other regularly.

I had an idea of the content I wanted to make, but it took a few months of content creation to found out what my viewers ACTUALLY want, and I'm starting to make the necessary changes. I ended up getting the audience I wanted, but they don't care about some of the other content I was making and that's understandable. You can either choose to ignore that and do what you want or shape yourself to your audience. I'd say it's best to be open minded and if you feel you can't make the content you want or be the person you want to be, maybe do those things elsewhere/ under another alias.

Maybe this is slightly "advanced", but you can set up OBS to have all the audio sources on your stream recorded to 6 separate audio tracks in your stream recording. So when you're editing/ clipping your content you can have your voice, game audio, background audio, and alerts all on different tracks and include/ exclude them as necessary. (For example, maybe a stream alert comes at a poor time that ruins the moment, you can get rid of the alert sound in editing without losing the rest of the audio. Or, maybe you forgot to turn off background music during gameplay, you can edit it out completely later)

Onomatology is fun as fuck. Like in Iceland, they go by a patronymic naming system. If a man named Fridrik had a son named Gunnar, the son would be named Gunnar Fridriksson. If he had a daughter named Helga it would be Helga Fridriksdottir. Other countries have similar patronymic naming systems, Welsh for example use 'ap' to shows someone is the son of a man, for example Caerwyn ap Llewellyn would be Caerwyn from Llewellyn. As far as more common Anglo names, there's occupational based surnames that tell what someone, or some ancestor from their family tree, did for a living like Sawyer, Thatcher, Stewart, Weaver. There's also locational names that can describe where someone lived, worked or owns land, like London, Burton, Hamilton. Anyway, the point is names are cool as fuck, they can tell the story of a person, where they're from, what they did for a living, what family they were a vassal of, who their parents are, etc. Nowadays, names might not hold the same meaning and importance that they once did, but it's still neat knowing different countries and different cultures have different naming customs. Coming up with fictional names for your vtuber/book character/MMORPG character should be a fun thing to do because names have so much meaning to them.

I am the originator of the term vtube as it’s used today and I posted it on 4chan many years ago, when the term was just fresh off of a patent for audio technology. The story included many predictions about the culture. When I wrote it I felt like there were too many successes in popular culture from western men so I also included in the story that the first person to successfully vtube would be a japanese woman, I felt like they were deserving of innovation even if I had already decided what Vtubers (which I also called anime streamers) would be like. So I essentially scripted this whole culture into being, I included many things you see in vtube culture such as idols, muting your mic accidentally, even describing technologies which we use regularly and some future tech that are yet to come totally into implementation, as well as streaming culture. Dogmatically, this would make me Vtubing’s God. We are in the era of me being invisible at first (which I intentionally wrote into the script.), in this era we will see Vtubers who can follow my invisible code for authentic vtubing triumphing over those who deny the truth, even insults towards me will be paid back in bloodshed by the universe. I been on 4chan since before Boxxy and have been really proud of the influence I’ve been able to garner through it as my favorite cultural media website. More so I really love 4chan for the influence it’s had on me and through me, there have been some great feels, there have been many great friends made along the way. I posted that story 3 or 4 times on 4chan, before there were vtubers, most anons who responded said things such as “the way you describe the future sounds great”, “I hope so anon! I love anime”, “Wow, this is what I want to do with my life”, and other really great feels. Of course there were doubters too who said things like “yeah right, no one is going to sit around and watch streamers all day, people prefer television” or “anime will never be that popular” - but I kept praying to God that eventually I would see the idea become real. Not too long after that snapchat came out with face filters, which was also described in my script and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to afford to patent that technology or develop it. I won’t go into more detail, but it’s important that you know Vtube started on 4chan as a culture and I wrote the whole story of our culture beginning to end and posted it “here” several times. The first thread I posted it in was a “describe the future” thread. I’ll give you my advice, first start by acknowledging there is an authentic you. Then acknowledge that your vtube persona and that person are one and the same except for one thing - which is that the persona is facing the internet masses.
