It's a whole combination of stuff like essence spam, farming items with influence, prefix/suffix blocking, the gardening stuff, running syndicates, etc
There are a whole bunch of tools they give all just for gacha that many people don't use because they can't be bothered and zoom-zoom for currency is more fun, but are invaluable for crafting your own stuff

Sites like craft of exile give you probabilities for every possible mod on your weapon datamined.

And before you even get started on THAT autism, you need to first understand the keyword spam and how, for example, increased damage is different from more damage is different from added damage, how armor has diminishing returns over a certain point, how you can have dodge, evasion and blind near max and still get blown up in one hit, how that all interacts with skill trees and gems, how 85% elemental resistance makes a world of difference compared to 75%, how there are special cases applying to uniques like Poet's Pen where you HAVE to reach particular APS points or actually gimp yourself on damage even though your attack speed is higher...

It's a really insane wide breadth of dense and obscure stuff and frankly, this is one of those games where most people are just completely better off following guides for their specific builds done by seasoned autists on the forums that tell you what mods to look out for and might even critique your current gear personally and assist you with choosing gear upgrades to prove their guide works - and you can dream up changes and feed them into Path of Building if you want to feel a little more independent. There's still a shitload of decisions and optimization to make even if you're just doing that.
