Yes, there is no balance that serves here. Puyo is very strong if both do not know how to play well, since puyo throws much more damage. And at a high level tetris is very fast and does not let you play puyo. The competitive mode is one called "swap" but I guess they preferred this as it is simpler

For Tetris there are basically two strats: You either leave four columns open to combo with that and send huge amounts of garbage or you do back to back t-spins and tetrises. The first one needs longer setup and if you do the four columns on the right, it can be risky if your opponent suddenly sends garbage your way. Doing them in them middle is harder but also safer. T-spins and tetris can be reliable, but also hard.

Puyo wants to combo, preferably before the first garbage arrives. Some make stacks on the side to still be able to clear stuff after garbage comes down.

As a complete noob at both of these games, it seems to me like Puyo is immensely advantageous. It just seems way easier to punish your opponent in it compared to tetris
If I understood this right, 1 line in tetris = 1 block in puyo, so clearing 4 lines which is the max in one move only punishes the enemy with 4 block, not even a complete line, while in puyo 1 combo = 1 line, 3-4 combos = half of the entire screen. Kind of unbalanced

Marine has been playing those type of games since she was a kid, too. She mentioned it on the Maruyama Game Shop, when she was a guest she got such an insane combo that she was isolated in first for the rest of the season.
Marine is basically Suisei's equivalent but in Puyo.

Almost all of the girls playing puyo were new to the game. Most of them were doing single combos sending no garbage and lucking into combos later in the matches. Compared to Koyori, Okayu, Korone, or Lui who were playing pretty solid tetris.
Marine is cracked at puyo as well as it being strong against lower skilled players she completely dominated. Now we get her as a coach if there is a future tournament and hopefully the girls continue practicing so the overall skill levels improve.

Not they weren't. You people don't understand that versus tetris is played differently to regular tetris. They were just clearing lines fast, which does nothing in this type of versus game. The main ways of tetris attacks are t-spins and long combo chains, which none of them were doing consistently.
