People don't make sense internally.
They are just animals driven by instinct, they want what they want, often that is to feel superior or smarter, the critical yet safe role where they can point out stuff or support something as they simmer in their smugness is a low hanging fruit.
Specially these days, a lot of people grow up being used to this sort of online posing show. You see it in any fandom, be it sports or games or cars or guns people will try to one up each other somehow and some are particularly desperate for it.
And everyone watching vtubers regularly is parasocial, anyone that actually gives a fuck about vtubers enough to talk about them is already invested. So yeah, they will always side with the streamers they like.
It's this combination of approval seeking, ego stroking and fanboyism that drives people to effectively pseudo virtue signal on vtuber shit.
But they do it on any other hobby too just within the different frame works of different contexts.
They are hypocrites? Almost everyone is a hypocrite, some people just more so than others.
Few will be aware of what they truly want and say it openly, without trying to rationalize it and blindly seeking their own satisfaction, but fully in control of their purpose.
