If you really want advice and you're coming from out of country, bring extra money for uber/cab rides everywhere and stick to the thing you're going to while in big, non tourist trap cities. If you don't wander around, you won't get fucked up.
The reason I add the caviot of non-tourist trap is because a lot of the 'travel destination' places in the US that see massive tourism specifically hire more securty/police to deal with faggots doing dumb shit because they don't need tons of stories getting out that you shouldn't go there because it's unsafe. I live in Philadelphia - yes, on purpose. We have one of the highest murder rates in the country. I have never been the victim of any level of violent crime. Somebody stole my mail once, and that's the worst thing to happen to me while living here, and that was a good 10+ years ago. 90% of the murders in the city happen exactly where you'd expect them to happen.
