My mother married another man, her choice.
He went to jail when I was 12.
My mother never recovered, and my father never found a woman to stay with him.
He's now 63 years old.
My mother's only explanation for not liking my father was that she hooked up with him while she was drunk, and while she tried to make it work, she thought he was too much of a "stick in the mud" for her.
She also never really settled down, and spent the last 3 decades of my life going from man to man until just ending up as a spinster.

This isn't unique to my mother, my sister also is a single mother, to 3 different children with 3 different fathers.
Almost every single woman I've met whose had children with no father around, they blame the father for "leaving them" but when you press them for information, cracks in that story easily emerge that they just wanted to sleep around and not settle down until it was too late.
