My prediction is that the next big step is going to be stylistic merge of Kizuna Ai and Hololive eras: 3D content (that's on the technical level of special occasions like concerts) will become more common and on really special occasions they'll do more creative and advanced stuff with 3D. No, they will probably lose a lot of audience to AI (it already started, look at /swarm/ and /waifu/ before the devs managed to actually filter CAI enough). AI is funnier, unicorns can finally be safe because they can attach themselves to computer programs that won't turn out to have a bf, and so on. There will still be a reason to watch vtubers because some people will want to have a parasocial friendship with a human specifically, but it will be a much smaller market.

I can see future interest being technology based, if there are game changing technologies it could give vtubing another spark. I mean even mouth capture can still be iffy right now, imagine really detailed faces with more expressions. Honestly I do think that vtubing needs to differentiate content aswell, just streaming doesn't cut it, the pandemic is over and a lot of people have less time to watch streams. Not to say that they have to stop streaming, but making pre edited 3D content on top of streaming is probably a good way to go about it.
Also it's a shame how a lot of vtubing content is literally just normal stuff (shows, concerts) but with vtubers instead of doing things that would only be possible because you are a vtuber.
