They managed to work their way into enormous communities on twitch (like Hasan/Sodapoppin/OTK aka Mizkif and Asmongold) and accelerated the idea that vtubing is just cringe anime girls who spend their days being egirls with uwu voices and being crass to a WIDE audience that's unfamiliar with vtubers. They completely ruined the idea of vtubing to so many people and caused nothing but drama and problems, and ended up just becoming sidekicks to the actual streamers of the scene.

Fans of NijiEN - This should be pretty obvious, but their absolute insanity online on popular spaces like twitter pretty much sold newfags on untraditional vtubing characteristics from agency vtubers. They managed to spin things so hard to casual/normie audiences to make it look like people in Hololive are the devil, they're stuck up, don't care for fans, just use everyone for money and act like fake idols. And the best part about all of this? They managed to sway people's minds to feel that way, then they praise NijiEN for the VERY THINGS THAT HOLOLIVE POPULARIZED.

Weirdly enough, Shylily herself once addressed a user in her chat shitting on agency vtubers and defended ones like hololive. She expressed how agencies like hololive filter out the baggage that indies have, create safe spaces for their members and fans and give the community purpose and reason to make vtubing a thing in the world. Meanwhile, NijiEN goes completely against this by acting EXACTLY how indies would. But it's the fans who make this worse, because they're trying to standardize this and criticizing all who don't conform to this.

The way these established EN fleshstreamers work is that they jump on a new trend or rising content creator and use them as props. They try to paint it as mutually beneficial, but it is really just a one-sided transaction that they will cut off when it outlives its usefulness.

It's the exact same tactic that musicians like Drake do: an established artist finds a burgeoning new genre/artist and collabs with them as they blow up. The established artist gets renewed interest in their work and can only benefit from the arrangement. The new artist experiences explosive growth but eventually the hype dies down. The moment this happens, the established artist drops them and moves onto the next trend, leaving them high and dry while on the decline.

A great example of this is what happened to Tenma from Phase Connect. Early in her career she collabed frequently with OfflineTV, one of the major Twitch fleshstreamer organizations (and the one who pestered Gura the most for a collab after debut). She got a pretty hefty boost from this at first, became a 3view for the first time, and it seemed like things were going well. But the problem is that the new viewers she got weren't there for her, they were a borrowed audience from OTV. She was merely a prop for OTV to parade around to benefit from the vtuber trend. Then they stopped getting growth from her and her numbers stalled out, they abruptly stopped collabing and began ghosting her when she tried to contact them again.

She quickly became "le funny accent" meme girl for their audience and ballooned from a 2view on YouTube to a mid-3view on Twitch and began focusing on that platform. Eventually her original YouTube audience got fed up and started leaving and she didn't realize a lot of her Twitch audience was OTV people. Eventually they started dragging their feet replying when she tried contacting them and eventually began getting ghosted and she lost that Twitch audience when the collabs stopped. Thankfully she and the rest of the company were able to bounce back with Pippa's rise, but it was definitely a dark time.
