I started getting into watching streams because of CSGO tournaments, but never really got into watching streamers other than CSGO pros with some occasional random streamers.
Then I discovered Hololive and Nijisanji in 2019, at first I was only a clipwatcher and maybe would tune in to streams once in a while, but then I discovered some Japanese indie vtubers and that's how I learned how to behave in streams as a vtuber fan.
After a few months, watching streams everyday had became my new normal.

Outside Hololive Nijisanji it's possible to become somewhat know to your oshi and you don't even need to be an huge paypig to do so.
Hell even in Hololive or Nijisanji you can see some people have some sort of "vip" status with someone like Kiara

I can only give so much to my oshi monetarily with a clear conscience, but I get what you mean. At some point it's not longer just entertainment, it's about the act of cheering itself and the joy you get seeing her cheer up when she's laughing with chat, or seeing her get all emotional over milestones. Most contractors requires a initial investment to start up that can range from 2-10k and most entreprenuers fail. A streamer is a contractor but riskier since the viewers are not obligated to put up a downpayment and you are relying on dumb luck to get exsposure. That's why as a streamer, the core fans is the goal, they provide free advertisement through word of mouth and if they get lucky with clippers and getting viral through it.
