What actually happened is they wanted to expand the Ai-chan brand but didn't have a model for it as other vtubers weren't relevant yet and Ai-chan wasn't as much a live streamer personality, she was a scripted content producer and singer so there was no model to expand on her brand with anyway. The multiple AI project failed initially, in the later stage love-chan and AI-pi were great but it was too late to grow their new identities. Any rumors that the original Ai-chan was being replaced or made to play a smaller role are fake and were even spread by media disinformation because Activ8 were not transparent with their plans. Also a huge part of Ai's fanbase is Chinese. When the Chinese Ai started appearing in Chinese events they felt betrayed because they thought they would get the original Ai experience instead, which they were not going to get anyway. You can imagine how vapid the Chinese antis were afterwards.

desu I don't think she'll be going anywhere just following the current vtuber meta of streaming. She might have started the vtubing trend, but it has turned into something else now. Her strengths are clearly in music, dancing, and performance. She should capitalize on that. It's oddly enough a niche that not a whole lot of vtubers fill, probably because you just can't do any of that with L2Ds, and 3D models need to be high quality to pull it off. Kizuna has the means and the passion to deliver the best content of that type that no other vtuber can match.

From what I remember, Nobuhime graduated because how restrictive her management was being (third party entity that owned her model). AyaMina I don't remember the details as much, but most likely due to upd8 not being such a great service platform in the end. Would have to dig through the archives, but upd8 had a poor track record of actually promoting most of the talents in their network, so the money flow for a lot of the talents wasn't that great.
