I think she burned herself out on Yakuza. She beat Kiwami 1 in 2 streams. I think the drastic change in Majime between 0 and 1(and the rest of the series) soured her experience too. When she gets to her 3rd form, she uses OverDeath(I think it was Mega Death in the NA release) which kills anyone who doesn't have the Zombie status, so because Pekora was reflexively using Holy Waters to get rid of the status, once she beat the 2nd form with a party with no zombies, it was a guaranteed wipe.

IIRC the attack comes up during her 3rd phase as well, but there's an indicator to give you a headsup on when it happens so you prepare yourself.

also yeah you could still make out stuff from the cutscenes alone without being able to understand the dialogue. I remember loving dmc3 to death because of the story even though I couldnt understand what they were saying at the time. same thing with ff7, tenchu 2 and ff12. I also read stuff up online afterwards, translated, that would help me understand things better. I even recall playing ff12 with a pt-en dictionary by my side
