I think if you find a way to make that smaller, the hair will have more volume as well, as the other anon said
And this point I'm not 100% sure about, but I think you could also have a better transition from the neck to the head, especially if it's slightly tilted to the side like that, the back side of the neck should flow more into the the back of the head, hope this makes sense and helps!

My two cents without my tablet handy: A lot of my discomfort looking at this sketch actually comes from the torso/neck. The shoulders are quite narrow, see how they compare to her ears as a landmark, and the left is much shorter than the right. There's that awkward extra contour between her neck and trapezius. The neck is also quite long, and the SCM lines are a little odd: extend the one on the left and it's not clear where it's going, it seems way too far to the right.

Mio has a pretty round face, so your ratio of height/width makes it seem less like Mio. Her eyes are sort of low set if you check her model but that works because she has big hair. You have a high peak but not enough lateral volume to make it work. Add another layer of side bangs outside her front bangs and it would help a lot, but then the toros/head disparity becomes even more marked.

The eyes are a bit big and pretty close together. If you actually draw the inner outline of the eye the distance between the two eyes is going to be very small compared to one eye width. This is rather subtle but the eyes look like they are facing forward, but since the head is turned a bit they feel just a little uncomfortable. Nose and mouth placement I agree with the others I think you might be thrown off by your reference. Your nose is high, but anime convention is often to move the nose up when the mouth opens instead of actually elongating the face and moving the lower jaw. Since her mouth is closed it makes it seem odd.

Also does Mio have 2 ears or 4? I have no idea

If you have major proportion issues, start from scratch. With time and experience you might be able to select and transform things into shape then refine your lines, but with this I'd say go back to construction of head, neck, torso, eye sockets and work from there. I'd also say are you doing this piece for fun, or to focus on improvement? If you are doing a study to improve consider using a real model as a reference, and not something that's already stylized.

Even straight long hair isn't really straight, remember all hair grows straight out from the head to start and then curves down. Unless it's very short, heavily styled, and/or wet, there will always be a pretty good gap between the actual head and the hair.

I feel like it doesn't look visibly interesting enough. I always liked the aesthetic of picrel as it was what inspired me to get better at drawing around 2 years ago and it being my phone wallpaper since then. I'm also not very confident on where shadows go or if I need more of them, I sort of just throw darker colors where I feel like they exist.

I like picrel's aesthetic too. I'm not an artist but I think the interesting thing is that there isn't much shading in it at all. It's all flat color except for the arm of the hoodie to help sell the bagginess of the fabric and to help separate the shape of the arm from the shape of the body which would otherwise be the same white color. And then the back leg just so it stands out from the front leg.

Even though there technically should be more shadows it looks better with only those two. Maybe you could take inspiration from cel shading and using shadows to make cool shapes like that.

Well, Daisuke Richard is great. But you don't have to know too much about shading to achieve that aesthetic. I recommend using a thinner lineart. But if you want to go full Daisuke, you should use more photoreference.

Oh man I've been digging into this recently. Few things that helped me were

1) You may have light sources, but even with a strong directional source like the sun you still have ambient light and reflected light. It doesn't all come from one direction.

2) You get "shadows" both from light sources casting shadows, but also due to the angle of the surface with regard to the viewer. Stuff facing you will reflect more than stuff angled away from you even if there are actual "shadows" at all.

3) You have a center light where the light shines most directly on the object, but highlights appear where the light is reflected towards the viewer. Sometimes those are in the same place, sometimes not.

I find it helpful to mentally divide shading into contour shadows: a ball (or breast) is bright facing the light, darker on the surface away from the light, and then a little light again if there's reflected light. Then there are cast shadows: is something literally casting a shadow directly on the object, like clothing, or hair. Highlights: highlights on a separate layer since you usually aren't blending the same way and they don't obey the same rules as the rest of the lighting. Then "environmental lights" like edge lights and obvious lights from external sources like the sun, lamps etc. Obviously this only works digital, traditionally you block in your values and get more detailed and there's a lot to be said for that. I'm not that good at it yet but that at least made it make sense for me. I can breakdown a csp I have lying around if you think that might make sense

Flat anime style shading still uses the same principles. It's more stylized but that doesn't make it easier, IMO.

I'm no expert but other artists use similar schemes. Basically line art and flats are straightforward, basic shading defines form and shape, and in my mind is dependent on the viewer more so than the light source. You can usually take your basic shading and add and change the occlusion and environmental light layers without changing anything underneath and it still looks pretty good. No expert here either but I think our brains instantly recognize weird/wrong things. Like the strong arm shadow that indicates severe lack of light source on the entire surface of the forearm, yet the hair highlight looks strongly coming from that same area where there is a light void.
I think the best way to learn how light and shadows work is just sketching strongly lit photos/real life over and over so drill it in your brain how it works until it's just second nature.
Kinda like learning how to play piano.
