What do you mean about how they work? It's a+bi+cj+dk, where a,b,c,d are real numbers and i,j,k are vectors. This extends the complex numbers by using "a" as the scalar and "bi+cj+dk" as the vector part. It's a way to represent rotations in 3D space, since they aren't commutative.
