Starwars FFG is simple enough, if you like star wars. I recommend not letting anyone play a force sensitive character and running Edge of Empire and running a typical smuggler/bountyhunter type game. I'm personally a fan of mongoose Traveller 2e for new players because character generation is basically "write my backstory and give me stats to match" if you prefer a more gritty Sci-Fi experience.
If you like superheros i've been reading Sentinels and think it might be worth picking up since it isn't as autistic as Mutant's and Masterminds.
Call of Cthulhu is good for RP heavy investigation, Delta Green (same system different setting) is good if you're an X-files fan.
If there's a genre you like, there's a game for it. I think there's even a good couple spaghetti western games, though i haven't been able to read up much on them.

Just, for the love of god, if you start with d&d, don't play 5e. Better yet, just don't start with d&d, but if you do please do not play 5e. It's basically designed with all of the worst aspects and player behaviours of d&d baked into the crust and it will poison your group from expanding into any other system. Warhammer fantasy RP is pretty good. But if anyone else has took their group escaped d&d hell give this man an option for fantasy.

I watched the character creation stream last night and I'm pretty invested in it already. Tabletop RPGs sound really cool and I've always wanted to play one or at least listen in on a session, but I've never had the opportunity before.
For those of you who may have played Hunter or similar games, how does their party composition look so far? Will the four of them have too much overlap in some areas, or be too specialized to handle a wider range of checks? Is there anything that stands out as concerning, or can you not really determine that because of how Calli directs the game?

While yes, Hunter is about handling creatures and heinous humans, it can also be about investigating and the more survival sort of horror. I'm sure Calli will keep the combat toggle on low, but even so she can easily give the players pointers on how to make their characters a bit more able to defend themselves, specially when they start facing craftier monsters who want to eliminate a Cell before it grows too big. The girls are pretty spread out on what they can do so it's fine for now, as the story progresses Calli can "lead" them to train and become more capable of fighting. But, as the nature of RPGs go, things can go completely off the rails and take a new direction, who knows!

Kiara's the combat-oriented survivalist, Ina's the brain of the operation with the best skill any group could have (First Aid), Gura's a sneaky rogue, Ame's a bit of a jack of all trades but with a few interesting skills here and there. As far as a group of Very Odd Civilians who learned that monsters exist and now have to fight them, there's plenty of opportunities for them to shine.

Ame's character, if played by someone I don't know, would be worried about. It's like someone playing a Chaotic Evil asshole, the player thinks they can do whatever they want and use "I'm just RPing!" as an excuse for when it gets too disruptive to the other players. But I'm sure Ame knows to not go too hard on the characterization and make her fun without being a nuisance.

I almost feel the same about Kiara's character, because being too combat focused can be an issue even in a combat-heavy RPG, and it wouldn't be fun if it gets boring for her since her character can't do much else out of fighting. But that's me speaking, I like when WoD characters are closer to a regular human being instead of a Character too utilitarian for a Game, you know what I mean?

Watoto's his herb dealer on speed dial, Gura's the actual delivery person, Ina's probably dirt poor and teaching one of his university classes just to get by, and Kiara either runs into him (literally) or attracts his attention because a strangely-dressed lady with a weird way of talking being followed around by two birds is about as occult as you can get.
