if you have the money, connections, and knowledge to accomplish your chuuba goals on your own, not many
otherwise, they can front you a model, stream assets, equipment, and help with difficult things like merch, releasing music, getting into cons, doing live events
owning your model/likeness is a big deal. getting to decide what your model looks like and how much to invest in it is a big deal. typically as an indie you're taking on more liability and responsibility in exchange for control

I'd also like to add that small corpos can help add structure. As an indie, you can be pretty aimless, but a GOOD corpo will help you meet targets and giving you things to do, to help you improve your craft and grow your audience.

But there exists bad corpos, who do zero promotion and often offer no benefit, except take their cut from your donations or merch. Do you research, ask around, take care picking who you work for just like you would in real life.

It's true that it's hard to learn the nitty gritty details but there are several things that clue you in BEFORE you sign up with any corpo.

Private
1) How long does it take for private correspondence to be replied to, i.e. do they ghost you or take way too long to reply to emails? Slow response times show a company is either short staffed or you are not a priority/you are a side project.
2) How many people in the company are you communicating with, that you know about? How many people attended your interview? If it's just one or two, then they are 100% shortstaffed and nothing they say changes that.
3) Take a look at the fine print in a contract before you sign. If you want more advice on what to look for, search on the internet for warning signs for contracts. Oftentimes, overly possessive or noncommittal clauses are huge red flags, as is pressuring you to sign it ASAP. However, these might not be deal killers, depending on your circumstance, i.e. how much YOU bring to the table.

Public
1) How have existing or previous members been treated? How have graduated talents been handled? Look up their (self or fan) posts on Reddit or search the /vt/ archives for fans talking about them or their circumstance. Since it's public information, take it with a grain of salt, similar to rumors. If the rumors are consistent and they're not good, then it's a problem. You can also just ask anonymously here, with no promises to for answer.
2) What type of promotion exists? Have their talents grown and can live on their own? Search their channels and statistics for growth, similar to how you would yourself.
3) If not, why not? Is it a lack of promotion? What if it's because they have a lot of restrictions on the type of content they can make? Do they even advertise themselves? You have to spend money to make money, and if they are not willing to spend money, then it's a problem because how else can they grow? Chuuba corpos are competing with established communities, and it takes time for anyone to grow. If they are reluctant, and only see this as a short term profit scheme then they are stupid and you will see that in their work with you.

Example of a good small corpo:
IdolEN put out a ton of high quality promotional material with plenty of ad space in multiple platforms, and that is reflected in the growth of their talents. They went from basically unknown Hebrew-only company to one of the larger corpos because of this investment. This growth led to ripple effects that can be seen in their talents.
Example of a bad small corpo:
Kawaii has had zero promotional material, and relied on another corpo's vtuber to even make their 3D models possible after a Kickstarter that begged their fans for money. Did they not have money to fund the models themselves? Why not? Did they pocket the profit of their talents? Huge red flags all over. The only reason they have grown is because of the hard work of the talents, which promote themselves.

tl;dr you can do your research by reading the room of their communities

I was just using Kawaii as an example of why being "big"/well-known isn't necessarily good. To me, it seems you're basically on your own with Kawaii.

Fresh corpos with no established community can be a crap-shoot. But as stated, private correspondence and paperwork can clue you in to issues that might arise.
Not having a proper startup funding is another problem, because again, how can you promote talents if they blow their entire load on models and rigging? True, model quality IS important, as is rigging, but that won't matter if no one sees them. IdolEN's promotional anime short wasn't cheap to make for example, but if you see the return on investment, it was 100% worth every cent.

As a talent from a small new corpo, you have to really think about your own set of goals when applying to them.

Depending on the corpo, you just can't expect a hololive-like treatment. You will be part of their growing journey, and you will most likely have to do the grind alongside them.

All of the advice the other anon gave to you is perfect and I actually went through thinking all of that and more before signing or even applying.

What I would add, is:
Don't sign with a small upcoming corpo for the sake of blowing up, but for rhe sake of reaching your own personal goals as a vtuber or creator.

This is an especially big one in an entertainment company. You aren't trying to get into some IT job where you only need to know the people you immediately work with. The entire thing is built around making a small group of people highly visible, and you should be aware of every party working behind the scenes. What kind of IT staff do they have? What kind of management? What's the CEO's involvement? Do they have an accountant or finance team? All of this is well within reasonable expectations to ask and be told about

Even if it is true, it's the same as the KawaiiPro kickstarter debacle. Expecting fans to do the work for you is a flawed operating principle and shows laziness or fear of commitment.

Word of mouth only works if there's something POSITIVE and notable to talk about. And even then, that's not all that's needed as evidenced by KawaiiPro's 3D debuts. I'm certain they would have had much more success if they had actually promoted the 3D debut. Instead, it was only their existing fans partaking in the event.
