You made a common misnomer. The term is actually "just deserts", although it has nothing to do with arid, sandy landscapes, or confectionary foods.

Apparently back in ye olden days "desert" was a word used to reference a "deserved reward or punishment", and "deserts" was simply a pluralization of that word, hence the idiom.

There's a few details I have to leave out because yab. But the general idea is that World of Darkness was supposed to be a collection of various author's works combined to make one big world. We'll call the guy's dad Chad. Chad spearheaded and invested a great deal into it. He got an investor at the time. However, Chad came from a culture of "Don't be a cunt and fuck over buisness partners", as such he got fucked over by his investor cause said investor is a cunt. Chad's son, we'll call UberChad, found this shit out when he was young. Previously mentioned culture also states "if someone fucks with you, ruin them". Overtime, Investor sucked at business and UberChad slowly got "friends" into company. He got tipped of Investor had to put brand as collelateral. UberChad then invested money into ruining Investor, which worked out. As such he swept in and got the brand back for dirt cheap.

This isn't the full, true story. But this is a good parrallel verison of it. Read it loosely and you got the gist of the story.

Stock settings usually have some shit wrong with them on the merit that they're not YOUR setting. Making some dumb shit up for your game is generally a lot better than using a stock setting, and also just generally more fun since you're less likely to get people going "ACKSHUALLY Pelor is really The Burning Hate" or "According to this oddly-shaped stain on Paul Hume's discarded underwear from 1992, deckers are lame and technopaths are superior".
If I had to pick some, though, Anima Beyond Fantasy's Gaia setting is pretty good (but it can become one-note if you remember the Inquisition exists), Numenera is literally ONLY good for its setting as the game itself is molten slag. Trinity Continuum has some good stuff going on and there's multiple eras/timelines so you can custom tailor it as you like while still having a solid base.

Half of WoD is depressing bilk with some good writing involved and the other half is your brother's middle school fanfictions somehow published as tabletop lore, and it is entirely a crapshoot which one you're getting because there's minimal cohesion between all the different WoD games. People are surprised Paradox instantly gifted them permissions upon finding out about the permissions fuckery when they've been trying for YEARS to get even a whiff of D&D's popularity in the streaming circuit. Paradox were probably watching this and salivating because it's essentially a promo stream for a line of books that were always second fiddle to the more popular sword and magic books, the fact that they're throwing in free goodies AND established a line with Cover is actually a nice move because TTRPGs used to be somewhat popular in Japan during the '80s and '90s until they dried up due to lack of new content and translations. (Record of Lodoss War was actually an adaptation of a real homebrew campaign consisting of D&D, RuneQuest, and a couple others, for instance.)

A free promotional stream of all 5 of HoloEN collaborating on H:tV would bring in more viewers than all but one or two other tabletop streams. Imagine being gifted a promotional stream that would be right underneath Critical Role in viewership, you'd be daft NOT to support it.

This anon is right as far as independent streamers are concerned (anyone whose familiar with the numbers knows that if a stream is big enough to 'steal' sales - you're already making more money than you're losing).

But you need to remember that a company like Cover has legal liability and gaming companies won't neccesarily react to it same way. Name me another corporate entity that regularly shows content made by other companies without express legal permission. You can't. Cover isn't in the wrong here, you guys are just being brainlet idealists. If Cover didn't follow these rules and there was real fallout from the damage (like retirements etc) you hypocrits would be blaming Cover for being dumb enough to stream with no legal protection. The "current" controversies surrounding Paradox and Onyx Path did really hurt the brand, but most of that stuff was pretty much due to a combination of bad oversight and letting some of the shit fester on its own and then getting burned hard for it, leading to a clusterfuck. Nowadays, most of the controversy is just due to the confusing differences between oWoD and Chronicles of Darkness (nWoD) and how Onyx Path and Paradox refuse to make them distinct from one another for newcomers.

>The entire White Wolf debacle with Chechnya and why the rebirth of old World of Darkness ended up getting shitcanned hard because directly tying a real-world event to persecution of minorities and then straight up saying vampires being the masterminds of it is really retarded when you're writing official lore, it turns out.
>The mess that is Beast: The Primordial and why you should never let any one book be the ultimate cross-platform story while also having incredibly cringe writing that ties into the writer's whimsical sexual orientations and repressed trauma from his youth to the point where the so-called heroes are just bullies that made him mad in high school and the amount of retribution written within is so extreme that you make the very player character an unlikeable and schizophrenic entity. Also fucked up and pissed off all the other writers because Matt, the writer of the book, made all of the other monsters in WoD have positive opinions of Beasts in his book (more Mary Sue shit) to the point that when new editions came out of the non-Beast books, they all unilaterally told Beast players to fuck off in a tiny blurb that wasn't even a sentence or two. Also infamously had a jab at Gamergate and was already super dated upon release. It then got worse when Matt had an accusation from a girl who claimed that he abused her as a teenager at a convention, which normally would be a take-it-or-leave-it situation until it was later found out that Matt's wife, who was also the lead executive of another game company, purposely hid and covered up multiple incidents of sexual harassment and abuse towards co-workers and convention goers. One of the other writers came out and substantiated the claims with Twitter receipts and now both Matt and his wife are out of work. They never lawyered up because they knew they'd stand no chance and possibly face jail time. Now Beast is both an abortion that's trying to be revived into something usable.
>The new vidya looking unpolished and an unworthy successor is more of a fault of Paradox Games than any of the actual source material would lend to. Might as well be a separate issue entirely, even if one is heavily based on the other.

WoD has always been the "coldsteel the hedgehog" of TRPG settings. You can always write your own fluff as a GM but I can't count on Mori knowing how to write anything but FF.net kind of content, given how she writes her lyrics.

Honestly, FF-tier writing is to be expected for any TTRPG, the main point is to have fun with it. That being said, Hunter is probably the most tame out of all of them since you're normally just regular people (can be ordinary or edgy) trying to fight off supernatural threats, serial killers, slashers, etc.

Japan considers entertainment to be an actual profession and not a fake career that you do when you're young like the Western world, and the collectivist culture ironically creates a scenario where people are expected to self-manage by "reading the situation" and making an intelligent choice. And if you're asking "isn't that the point of a manager", then you have correctly identified the problem.

What people will never get is that there is no 2nd slot on ttrpgs. There's not a "second slot" on almost anything except maybe pepsi and coke, there's only on-brand and off-brand. People either get the product they percieve as best or they settle for an inferior one. The debate is on which one is at the top slot and which one is the decieving inferior copy, like android vs apple.
No one actually wants to use the second best thing if they can have the first one, there's no second slot as much as there's a losing pile of "not first".
DnD is TTRPGs. It is THE tabletop rpg. It is the benchmark for what is and isnt a pen and paper rpg, there's no second slot because if you're not dnd you're simply "not dnd" in the minds of most people, an offbrand rpg that may or may not be better but at the end of the day its thought as "something that isnt dnd", not as its own thing.
There's not and there will never be a real debate of pros and cons between dnd and something else that isnt just people using dnd as a measuring stick instead of comparing two systems as equals.
D&D It is the untouchable standard because it has transcended standards, it has become THE rpg, the one you put in movies, the one you use as the example.

You can stream a game. You dont actually need to ask permission to stream as long as you're adding creative input or game commentary. It is within your legal rights, it is "fair use".
YOU can do this, an indie, an individual person. A company cant.
The holocaust came from a cascading DMCA with Cover's status as a company, not a "talent management agency". If they simply oversaw streamers doing their own thing, it would've never happened, but since they have a minimum of working hours and pay them an actual salary, they're a company.
A company cannot stream games without permission from the owner, thats why Cover needs to ask. It has nothing to do with it being a japanese company or being anal about permissions for whatever other reason. Even if they KNOW they have permission, they still need to ask.

World of Darkness operates off of skill sets with no real pre-defined class. You can absolutely make specific archetypes, but there's no hard definition like there is in other TTRPGs. Here's what the character sheet looks like. The list of merits is far too large and there's no pdf sharing on this board, but you get the idea.

Looking at the release on https://www.worldofdarkness.com/dark-pack it seems totally useless for Hololive. Hololive is using it for explicitly commercial purposes which puts almost all of it in a very grey area. It seems tailored to individual streamers, not a corporation.

Also these boilerplate disclaimers are pretty worthless in general. They very often are preempted by statute or case law that can totally fuck you in the ass if you aren't careful. There's no meeting of the minds here. And the rights holder would have a very strong position, especially against a corporate entitiy.

So while I see why Mori and the managers thought they were fine, and Paradox is no doubt fine with it, I also see why corporate freaked out.
