It's sort of weird that Kotoka felt she had to keep this secret to begin with. It was so obvious. Even though her English is some of the best and clearest I've ever heard from a native Japanese person, I don't think she was doing a great job of keeping it secret. I guess it shows that she is paranoid about the "Why are they hiring a Japanese person for the English branch" thing but this board is literally the only place I see people post about that as if it's a bad thing. I think some of them put way too much weight on what this board says when it's really only a small part of the VTuber community. In my opinion it doesn't matter what your native language is as long as you do intend to speak primarily English since you're joining the English branch. As long as you meet that qualification, you are worthy.
She's certainly not the only VTuber I've seen who felt the need to hide her nationality but it is kind of surprising that she was so worried about it when there have been many people in NijiEN with a similar situation and they're extremely open about it.
I do hope she achieves her goal of being a bridge between JP and EN because despite all the fluent Japanese speakers in EN there hasn't really felt like anyone making a strong effort towards it. Just some occasional collabs here and there. I would definitely like to see the branches get closer to each other.

Meloco was obviously ESL, but if everyone knew they hired not one, but TWO ESL Japanese, there could've been outrage for not hiring native English-speakers in the EN branch, out of all the auditions. Petra has been doing that for a while, and Selen in a smaller scale. She had to stop since she moved to Japan, as shes not doing as much collabs as before due to being a full time student now, but she organized and participated in a lot of stuff. I watched the stream and she seemed to genuinely think she had kept it a secret. She was doing weird things like saying "Uber Eats" and saying she was getting burgers or pizza which is funny because I didn't even notice her doing those things. It's also funny because it's not as if America doesn't have a shitton of Japanese restaurants, plenty of American VTubers seem to eat at them quite frequently with the stuff they say they're eating for dinner. But she mentioned something about how she hadn't been to America since she was like 10 so she probably has legitimately no idea what things are like over here, which explains why she did such a bad job pretending to be American.
