11 percent of Americans have never left the state they were born in.
13 percent of Americans have never been in an airplane.
40 percent of Americans have never left the country.
50 percent of Americans have been to ten or fewer states.

The vast majority of Americans give zero fucks about the vast majority of the country. They're called flyover states for a reason. Knowing the difference between taupe and camel comes up far more often than knowing the capital of North Dakota.

>> No.4123093

>>4122956
Dude, it's worse than just not knowing the capitals. It's not even knowing the fucking states man, I used capitals to add another layer. If someone was born and raised in America, and they didn't know that North Dakota was a state, that's kinda concerning. Add on not knowing more than Suisei only knew 75% of her country that she lived in her whole life man. That's just sad.

A better comparison might be not knowing at least 5 major cities inside the State you live in.

I expect if you asked a random American "Is North Dakota a state?", I'd expect almost all would answer correctly, even by the low standards of Americans. If you ask them to point it out on a map, many would probably struggle. And if you asked them "List all 50 states, any order, no hints." they'd almost definitely forget a few to a lot. It depends on the format of the quiz.

This could honestly be a bias in my education as I grew up in a state that put education really high up. But what you're saying is exactly like quizzes I had to take as a kid, we got 15 mins to list all 50 states and then 15 mins to write the acronyms on a blank map of the US. Reasonably a few missed, that's fine. I'm really rushing on Suisei and below on the scoring. Like, c'mon. And that's going against my own oshi of Marine. I expected better of her.

Game mode "Type". Not easy mode. Not Autocomplete.

The 3 errors were misspellings or typos, not failing to know the state:
- Typo double-tapped an extra 'a' in Oklahoma.
- Typo'd Georgia as "Geogia" lol
- Added an extra 'n' in Louisiana. An actual misspelling/mistake, I truly thought it had 2 n's.

I will also admit, I had to pause and think whether I was spelling Wyoming correctly.

The only reason I remember all my country states is because how little there is and because the names are simple as fuck. I mean, who would forget names like northern territory, western australia and south australia? I don't remember the names of the capital cities of wa and victoria. The average person isn't going to remember the names of all the states of a place like america, much less be able to locate them on the map. Unless you care about the other states in some form its classified as somewhat needless information so you'll forget it in time.

Good exercise in memorization, sure. But there is also so many of them that it'd take quite a bit of time and there is a lot better things you could practise on that are arguably better for a child to learn. Frankly, outside the most major states in america, the rest don't matter and there is no real reason for a child to drill them in nor for the average person to care about them unless they live in them. Most modern people don't give an actual shit about the countries they live in nor is there any reason to because nationalism is dumb but that's offtopic.

Of course not. The names are just a foundation.

> Point is, you can always open a map and take a look at it

Yes, but if you're always guided by what's at the tip of your nose, you never will. And your world will end up being as big as the five to ten places you've been to. Which in turn will cripple your ability to understand those few things that you do know about.

A broader view is important.

It's super offtopic so you are only getting a single post from me. But nationalism is pointless and potentially a detriment in modern times. We are past the point of the need for the entire retarded region political bullshit. As time moves on and humans advance the less value there is in country governments etc and more value in the global value of things. Nationalism in modern times only gives rise to things like the cesspool that needs to be nuked off the planet caused west taiwan.
