I just listened to Ussewa for the first time and this song is ridiculous. The lyrics themselves are hard and the melody and tempo don't help. There's very little backing melody in the non-chorus verses so that the vocalist is creating 90% of the song with her voice during those parts. The tempo ranges from medium to fast without any warning. The lyrics contain uncommon/difficult words. It may be a good song but how anyone thought /vt/ would be able to sing it is beyond me. If you're gonna get a bunch of amateurs to sing something together you might wanna pick something of lower difficulty or else you'll just get a cacophony of noise. Perhaps a ballad? Like Palette or Error? The project was in jeopardy before it even began.

Obviously not final at all, I havent added the instrumental yet. I've only layered all the vocals together and matched them up. The final version won't be so wide (I just do that to check that everything lines up) and I'll arrange the vocals to focus on certain anons.

For starters, you'll need a daw. They're mostly* the same. *This is a huge rabbit hole, but it's not important at all for beginners, so don't bother looking into it.
Reaper is free and its stock plugins are really good. I use ableton because I'm comfortable with it, but Logic, FL, reason, and bitwig are all good too. Pro tools is the industry standard, and every studio and mix/master engineer I know of uses it for post production work, but I think it's old and outdated and a pain to work in.
It doesn't really matter which one you end up choosing since the tools are essentially the same across the board, and you'll get used to it. Watch some videos and see what you like.

Having a music background will help, but you don't need it to start. Learn it as you go. Have fun with the process and experiment.
I don't have any resources for scoring, but off the top of my head, I know that Christian Henson, the guy who founded Spitfire Audio, a company that makes kontakt libraries (they have a free plugin called spitfire labs that I would highly recommend), has a youtube channel. Mick Gordon, has a video about how he did DOOM, and he was on a podcast, where he talked about the logistics around video game sound design.

When you start understanding what you're doing, gearslutz is useful. If you can't find a video, there's a 60 page gearslutz thread on it. Listen to as much music as you can. Pay attention to all the details like the mix, sound design, the arrangement, and learn about the people behind all that. There's a lot of conflicting advice on the internet, so don't get lost reading a bunch of bullshit (possibly including this post). Above all, trust your ears. I hope this helps.
If you're wondering about my credentials, I've only been doing this for 7 or 8 years. A mastering engineer has said that my mixes are good. Take that how you will.

I thought I'd try to add bass and drums to the sax anon recorded since I've been listening to some drum/bass/sax trio stuff lately. Okay, I'll head to bed now. Submissions close whenever I wake up tomorrow, probably around 12pm (afternoon) pdt.

As of right now, there are 43 usseewa submissions and 28 mikoboat submissions. I'll need to clean up all the new takes, fit them to the instrumental, do all the eq/comp bullshit, and then arrange all the takes. For usseewa I just realized I've been spelling it wrong, I'm thinking everyone will sing together for each chorus, and someone will get to solo prechorus 2. Those are the only ideas I have so far, so if you have suggestions, let me know.
For migoboat, I think there'll be 3 versions: one with all the singing submissions + instrumental, one with everyone singing + everyone who submitted an instrumental take, and one with only instruments submitted which I might try to add to as well, if I can figure something out.
I'll do my best to post regular updates, maybe once a day or every other day. I think it'll take about a week maybe 2 because I have exams coming up soon. I could probably do it all in like 2 days but I'm still recovering from the all nighter I pulled last week. Again, suggestions and references are welcome. You can even email me suggestions if you want.

Pic related is the chain I'm using to clean everyone's takes up, if anyone's curious. I think it's a pretty fast workflow, I really only have to adjust the eq for most takes and occasionally use soothe if I'm taking too long on the eq. Hipass between 70-120, some dynamic eq for resonances in the mids and upper mids, static eq for room tone (when there's reverb). I found that a low pass or low shelf around 18k really helps get rid of that digital tone if it's there, but I didn't do that to all of them. Also, somewhat related blogpost: I just ordered new headphones and if they get here in time I'll be able to use them, but they're shipping from Latvia or something so it's not likely.

I'm sure the drawanons are lurking. I'm not sure if there will be a video, so I'll just leave that to them, if that's okay. I don't know how to edit videos.

I'm running ableton. It's pretty nice, the stock plugins are good enough that pretty much the only 3rd party plugins I regularly use are the fabfilter ones and some analog emulators. I also use a lot of max stuff, but max is integrated into ableton, so it might as well be stock. I used to have a hardware comp, but I hated having to reach over my desk to use it.

This isn't mixed or arranged, I only lined up all the submissions with the original song. Took a while because the instrumental was off beat by a few ms and I had to resync all the ones I did in the first batch a few days ago, (in light green) as well as the ones in the newer batch today (in light blue).
I have to separate the ad libs next, then gain stage, then arrange it properly, and then I can add the instrumental in and mix that too. Also need to figure out the fx at 2:36, like they had it in the original. And then I need to do it again for mikoboat, but that should be much easier.
I panned everything so it would be easier to pick yourself out. I did have to cut one submission out because there was so much background noise. It sounded like the anon had the song playing in the background on speakers. If you can't hear yourself, it's probably because you were clipping hard. All the clipping really blends together.
I'd guess that it'll be about 1.5 to 2 weeks until final versions are ready which works out for me since my headphones are coming in on Friday so feel free to let the thread die. This kind of stuff takes some time to get right.
If anyone's curious, I added to the clean up process a little bit. I used the ghz eq and limiter on the submissions with good mics for some color. I like the way the limiter sounds on vocals, and maybe I'm hearing things that aren't there, but I think boosting the air band on the eq and then cutting the highs on the limiter sounds nice.
