The fact that the whole permissions thing and how it works is STILL a fucking mystery to everyone kinda shows how fucking weak cover is at handling them.

I'm pretty sure the way it works is that the talent requests permissions from some manager ahead of time, who then passes the request along to the relevant publisher. In many cases, the publisher may be slow to respond, or not even exist anymore, or the manager responsible for getting permissions works at a glacial pace or can't make heads or tails of who they're supposed to ask to get permissions for certain games because of the labyrinthine setup of IP copyright.

All of this must be done at least a week or two in advance and may come with conditions or otherwise require negotiation to get them. As far as I know, they do have a collection of games with which they have perpetual permissions, or already have a working relationship with the publisher so its easier to get permissions on an as-needed basis.
