It's a storytelling failure.
We have to believe she's this loving partner to the main character, based on like 2 minutes of video cutscenes you're shown at the start of the game. Meanwhile Mia is the reason you're in hillbilly swamp hell, and she spends the next hour of gameplay once you find her acting like a crazy person, yelling at Ethan, and then attacking you with a fucking chainsaw.

Also Mia is revealed to have secretly had a hand in the whole fucking mould thing. So yeah, as a player piloting the protagonist around with only a non-diegetic understanding of Mia's relationship with me I fucking despise her and have no reason to want to save her.
