This might be a dumb questions but what is the whole reason behind the oshi mentality? Just because a person is a vtuber it can't be treated as a regular streamer? And i'm not saying people are the problem here because the vtuber themselves play with this concept, so, it's perhaps a psychological tool? I'm fascinated by this and I know trying to undertand it is not going to take me nowhere but maybe you guys can explain what it means to you

Oshi is just a nip word that basically means your favorite. People have favorite everythings including entertainers.

Its like any other fanboyism. Oshi is just a word, but its the same thing from streamer, to youtuber, to singer, to brand of video card. There's no difference.

you don't know what oshi means

If you by that you mean the entire "living with chuuba in a parasocial relationship and deluding yourself you're actually and love" then it probably existed since time immemorial. Actors and then streamers always had psycho fans completely over their heads with the adoration for their favourite, streaming also gave rise to normal fleshtuber egirls reaping money from insane simps. It all seems to be a pathology of natural human attraction. Vtuber culture only gave it a new name.

It means choosing your favourite member of an idol group and supporting them.
It doesn't mean which member you're in love with.
It's not a vtuber thing, or an anime girl thing and it's definitely not a streamer thing.

unfortunately idol culture is a thing

It's just your favourite, or depending on context, the one you are rooting for to succeed and carve their path.
For instance, my oshi is Okayu. Originally because I loved the vibe of her streams, but then because she started to put effort into releasing songs and having a solo live. I enjoy watching her put in effort to progress her career, especially since she was still unsure about what she wanted to do when I originally started watching her. In fact she was still saying she didn't care for doing the idol activity side of things at the time.
Over time, however, I found I enjoy Fubuki's streams more overall. I wouldn't call her my oshi, though, because I don't get that same feeling I do from Okayu. Others might have different feelings for why someone is their oshi though, and being the chuuba they find most entertaining on stream could just as well be it. And as others have said, it's not really something restricted to chuubas, it's mostly a JP thing is all.

If my answer seems completely different from what you thought you were asking about, then perhaps you are conflating having an oshi with being a gachikoi.

they were just nice enough to not co-opt the word "waifu" but we still needed the equivalent term for: "your favorite fictonal/roleplayed anime girl that you want to wife".

Also note that by this definition, if your chuuba doesn't believe in kayfabe, she is not qualified to be an oshi. Males of course also can't be oshis.

It just means you're an obsessive fanboy over an idol, not necessarily only "having a favorite vtuber", though most EOPs use it that way now, but don't overthink it.

but basically this. support and root for the girl's success and not just view them as a product to consume.

It's definitely a choice, some might have less control over their actions, thoughts and feelings than other people.

it's an idol thing. if you're anti-idol you thus shouldn't actually have an oshi.

I assume when you say "Oshi", you mean the obsessive culture around a lot of vtubers and not just having a favorite streamer.
In which case, it exists for regular streamers, too. We just call it by a different name - "stan" culture. Dream has stans, pewds has stans, even someone like DSP has stans. Celebrity worship is just a thing that will never go away.
