The golden age of vtubing was when Hololive's 3D lives were actually live and just messing around fun instead of the 28th boring doshit concert in a row with the same 5 songs.
Also when Choco and Aki could whore themselves out with ASMR, that was good.

Eh, I could see even a pessimistic/earlier interpretation going up to the beginning of the COVID lockdowns, e.g. Late 2016 through March 2020. No EOP normies gave a shit until they were locked in their houses.

Whatever the answer, it was entirely prior to /vt/ existing as a board.
This place is fucking awful and I hate every one of you.

2018 and 2020
>2018
This was the first golden age that give birth to nijisanji and hololive. This was peak unity when all vtubers are one and working together to explore the possibility of vtubing and push it into the mainstream with The 4 Heavenly Kings leading the charge.
>2020
It was when hololive pushing the vtubing into the global scene, inspired 100s to follow their paths and able them to make see the full potential of vtubing outside and inside of japan. Also, this was when SC became a culture after hololive (Kiryu Coco) and all the nip's big corpo open their eyes to the potential of vtubers after the big success of Holo's curry meshi concerts and nijisanji's koshien

You probably mean once unicorn pandering became the default for Hololive is when all the creative cross company streams started to die and it became a circlejerk of boring tropes.

would probably call it the golden age of hololive. Some of their best content was definitely from that time.

First golden age:
2016 ~ until Nijisanji mass produced 2D VTubers, that looked pretty primitive back then (l2d is great nowadays, but the software and skill-level evolved a lot)

I offer different perspective. Late 2019 to summer 2020 was the best because
-there was no permission bullshit
-there was pandemic out there and I was still a NEET so I could watch Hololive 16 hours a day
-the fanbase wasn't a complete cancer fest like post EN, Taiwan yab Hololive

The golden age is still yet to come. Right now vtubing has gotten stuck in a rut and attracted many wrong fans that are just porn addicts or fad chasers. That most people think vtubing is streaming with an anime character really answers how you can know this. Next, some will mention Kizuna Ai but gloss over the fact that it was a team production, pre-recorded videos, and that it was inspired by the vocaloid scene. It was also not popular enough that everyone now can even claim to have known or cared who or what Kizuna Ai was. Vtubing needs a hard crash or soft crash before it can reformulate as a proper type of virtual mixed-media based on virtual characters.

I think some of the current wave will still be around for it, like ironmouse, pekora and suisei. Most people that had other goals in life will have moved on if and when they think they can get legitimacy as themselves in whatever industry, or find they can get more money. AI will definitely be part of the future but I haven't seen any sign that it is far enough to fully replace human operators within the next few decades. I think it's going to start with things like automating the production process, enhancing the content, using high quality voice banks for mapping the input voice to the character voice. It's going to be things like that years before we see decent attempts at AI vtubers. Just before that is going to be what people come to call the golden age of vtubing.

I'm quite conservative in fact. The concept existed for many decades, virtual idols were part of science fiction. Some thought Miku Hatsune was the coming of that science fiction. Others are so young or live day to day so they think it's around the corner. I'm saying it will happen but in decades, so it will be the 2040s or 2050s at least before we see real AItubers. It will be corporations that can develop and control them and they'll use them to control the population of susceptible teens that are the children of impressionable zoomers today. It's before that time that you'll see technology raise production values and mixed media possibilities for Vtubers.

This 100%, i used to browse /jp/ pretty regularly and the old /vyt/ combined threads were how i got into this hobby. It was less about tribalfagging and idol shit and more just anons talking about vtubers they'd find or new corpos at the time like holo and niji starting up.

2019 until late 2021 was probably the best time to be a fan of vtubers.

Hololive declined in early 2021 under the pressure of the china drama, Coco's graduation, Haachama's decline, half the JP branch getting sick or losing interest in streaming, HoloMyth all becoming lazy, etc but Nijisanji EN picked up the mantle of vtubing until Luxiem debuted and permanently killed the hobby.
