Though I prefer writing long fics because you can build more characters up, my short fics seem to come out better. Probably because short stories require less editing and you don't end up adding a million extra scenes and getting scope creep.

Utterly dependant on content. I feel like long fics can allow for better setup and better payoff, but if it doesn't land its a lot of wasted time and effort. A few fics I read and enjoyed ~2 months ago:

Talent Retrieval: I like it. It quickly builds an original universe, there's some action, some tension. As for ways to improve, I think it relies too much on the infodump in the 2nd paragraph. It's better than placing it at the beginning because it would make the start boring, but now there's a pause to breathe on a fic short enough to not need any.

In The Jungle: I like it a lot. The semi-consensual abuse goes well with the characters not exactly sure of their relationship. There's also that feeling of trusting the other person to not go too far, but still from time to time you're not really sure that they're going to listen if you ask them to stop. And some kind of aftercare, that's also very important. The secondary characters add a lot too. I'm not sure what makes them work so well. It might be relying on their actual personality, so you don't need to introduce them and can use them right away. However, I'm not sure about the direction that it takes. It's like there was an idea at the beginning, that didn't really work out and the story changed but you can still see traces of the old story. Botan at the beginning of the story and Botan near the end feel like two different characters that belongs in two different stories. This is the kind of thing that can get fixed/improved with following chapters, but considering that there's only one, it adds to the "unfinished" feeling. A quick check in the archive (>>4492361) makes things even more confusing because the author said he wasn't planning on continuing it. I can see two reasons, either he wanted to move on and work on something else, or the story is finished as it is and I didn't get it.

The things that happen in the two stories are the same, they're stories about making up with someone and realising that "making up" as a discrete event doesn't actually exist. But in terms of context, they're the opposite. Botan is battling an incompetent and distant bureaucracy, Polka is battling her own too efficient mind. Botan is more connected to the physical, Polka to the mental. Botan gets out of this by constant physical work, Polka with one big mental break. Death comes to Botan through her mind, and to Polka through her body. I'm probably missing a few other things. Now, does this adds to the enjoyment of the story? I think it does. It makes it easier to make a coherent story, and coherence is good. Even with the part 2 all over the place (as it's from Polka's internal point of view), things still make sense.

Life With A Lion Isn't Easy, Y'know?: I like it a lot, I think the beginning is very solid, the more unusual part around chapter 4~5 is a good idea with good execution that helped create some tension and get things into motion again. Right now things have calmed down, and it seems that the author is waiting for more inspiration (>>32247793), so I would say it has a good gestion on a "macro" level. I don't remember it with enough details to talk about the micro level, so I'll keep the criticism at the macro level. It seems that in general the story depends a lot of the inspiration of the author. I don't mean that from an entitled point of view as in "write more and more quickly, I want to know the rest", it's more "lack of inspiration seems to be the main roadblock for that story". It's also possible that you already got what you want from writing it and don't feel the need to continue/finish/polish it, and that's fine. Not everything needs to be a complete story, it's already quite enjoyable as is.

And one last for today: Fuwa Fuwa Time: The first thing I noticed is that it's that author because there's a toast with a hole, in which you cook an egg. This time the hole is heart-shaped, and there's no mention of a character actually making the hole in the toast. I could stop here, as I love most of what that author makes (the exception being Amelia x Astel). I will note that after my first reading, I felt like something dark was lurking somewhere, but now that I've read it again I don't get this feeling anymore. It's a warm and comfy fic that doesn't deny the sometimes harsh realities of life, so the K-On reference in the title fits perfectly. Considering that it's the author of Paradise Lost, I'm not surprised. As always, there are lots of details that makes the relationships between the characters and the characters themselves more real. That goes for the setting too: anon is with Watame but still has to be away most of the day to work, and comes home exhausted. Watame is as warm and fluffy as you expect, but she also get anxious and lonely easily.
