What factors, internal or external, contribute to either speeding up or slowing down the aging process?

I wouldn't be surprised if there's only one more gen each of Holo JP and ID, and only two or three more gens of Holo EN, and at least one of those Holo Gens will be a generation that's in Europe. After that I don't think they will introduce any more generations of anything until Holo's start retiring.

I see most vtubers falling into two camps. One, they’re young and in education of some kind and they’re streaming until they get a real job. Two, is they intend to ride it out as long as they can. Hololive being the high watermark for “making it” in streaming as a vtuber right now I’m guessing most or all of them aiming for option 2. No idea how long vtubing is going to stick around, if it’s a fad or a longer trend in streaming. Vtubing is a lot more expensive than you’re ordinary face cam and playing and the competition to get noticed is pretty high already. I’d give it another 2 years before before interest starts to slide.

This isn't like real-world idols where they're eventually forced to retire due to age, and it's not like it costs Cover anything to allow them to continue to exist if they make no money.

The only reason to leave is if they're forced due to breach of contract, or if they could make more money doing something else. But even if you're not making much, how do you get another job making more, when you've got a gap in your resume that can't be explained because of NDA? The only reason to quit is if you're making less than minimum wage.

If there's any allegory to trends in entertainment, they usually last about 10 years before they vanish due to folks losing interest. I'd say the 2020s will be dominated by Vtubing in some form, only for it to fade out like Vocaloid eventually did into the background.

Compared to webcam streaming, the quality of a model and rigging are pretty important for mass appeal and good ones can take thousands of dollars. Compared to regular cam streamers where you really just need lighting and a decent enough cam to make out the face the investment at the beginning is much smaller. In the small stages of a channel where you won't be making any money for probably a year at least, a decent vtuber model is a higher investment compared to a logitech webcam. Vtubers also still have to get a camera or like an iphone to catch their face on top of that too.
Upgrading a model can be pretty drastic and jarring too (look at Iron Mouse's model).

The average life span can only be assumed to be similar to any other Streamer/Youtuber which is literally "whenever they feel like for whatever reason they have at the time".
