What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Streaming on YouTube and Twitch?
Thoughts?

I know there are viewers who outright refuse to watch YouTube streams and some who refuse to watch Twitch streams.

>> No.34098976

>>34098470
I prefer twitch, but I'm not going to just write someone off entirely if they use youtube. Though I do find since streaming isn't youtube's primary focus, it's easy for livestreams to just get buried under normal uploads in the sub box.

>> No.34100125

>>34098470
Streaming on twitch is really straightforward. Try to stream as much as possible and get better at streaming and generally you can get slow but steady gains depending on how good you are at streaming and how much people like you.

As for youtube, you can stream there ok. But you absolutely HAVE TO make edited videos and shorts to be able to reach new people. People just wont slowly trickle into your stream on youtube like they do on twitch. As a streamer you have to see your videos as advertisements for you streams. The positives of this approach is that you can sometimes get really lucky and get massive boosts out of nowhere. The negatives is that you can put a huge amount of work into your channel with little to no return sometimes. You become a slave to a difficult to predict and understand algorithm.

>> No.34100235

>>34100125
If I'm not mistaken, making shorts is youtube meta right now right? Should I try to spam shorts content asap?

>> No.34100342

>>34100235
Don't spam it, but it's a good way to get your name out there. Also consider putting them on TikTok

>> No.34100619

>>34100235
If you can make them good, then absolutely. I wouldn't spam them though, I think the algorithm will detect that your shorts are shit and not spread them around as much if you do this.

The nice thing about shorts is that youtube really does test a completely new channel's short on actual people and if it performs well it will increase the amount of people it shows them to, potentially getting huge numbers of eyes on your stuff.

Also, if you stream on your youtube channel I would recommend putting the stream archives on a second channel and/or unlist them and put them in a playlist or something. You want a new person looking at your channel to see your highest quality stuff and not just be presented with a wall of very difficult to get into stream archives.

>> No.34102231

>>34098470
Youtube has way better back end stream architecture, has actually useful analytics, and most importantly doesn't nuke your content if it's more than 2 weeks old. It also has orders of magnitude more viewers on the platform overall, and more from around the world. Twitch is basically an NA only platform, or at least limited to the anglo-sphere. The ability to schedule streams ahead of time and have a waiting room is invaluable for getting viewers in before the stream starts. Youtube will also recommend your vods and puts them in search results, where as twitch will only ever advertise you if you are currently live.

Downside is it's comparatively harder to be seen on youtube since the live search and categorizing fucking sucks.

>>34098976
>since streaming isn't youtube's primary focus, it's easy for livestreams to just get buried under normal uploads in the sub box.
This is not true. Streams that are currently live stay at the top of the subscriptions feed even if new videos get published since they started. It's only after they end that they get pushed down to where they are supposed to be in the timeline.

>> No.34102483

So what I'm reading is that the meta strategy is
>Stream on Twitch
>Have a clips yt channel to advertise your twitch
>Store your vods on a seperate yt channel for viewers who can't make it to streams
>These things will help bring viewers into your content sphere

>> No.34102754

>>34102231
I suppose a better way to phrase it would be it's easy to overlook them. This could just be a personal thing, but I would prefer it if youtube separated the currently live streams into its own category above the recent uploads, so there's a clear distinction "this is going on now" than "this happened".
I think the recent change to the actual design of the live indicator is the main contributor to this, it's easy to mistake as just being part of someone's thumbnail rather than actually signalling that the stream is currently live. The old design had a big, eye catching LIVE NOW box underneath the actual thumbnail instead of the current small icon overlayed on top of the thumbnail, which makes it more immediately obvious.

I was able to get a USB condenser mic with a pop filter and an arm for under fifty bucks. I threw some filters (noise gate, compressor, noise reduction and added gain) on it in OBS and I don't really see myself upgrading it any time soon. It suits my needs as far as streaming is concerned very well; I don't use it to record music or anything.
>do I actually need an audio interface?
In my experience, no. I might get one in the future, but my USB mic has served me very well so far.

I used a $15 karaoke mic for 4 years. It only sounded like shit because my room makes it sound like shit. It was only recently that the preattached cable finally wore out so I've been doing a lot of research to buy an audio interface and a few mics so I can use one with a replacable XLR cable.

>AKG P120 $85
condenser mic because I sing and will use that for covers. Unless you have a fully treated room or babi cage, you should use a dynamic microphone for streaming.

>AKG P5i $95
dynamic mic which is better for streaming since there is a lot of potential background noise in my room. it’s very good at rejecting noise from holding the microphone from what I’ve seen.

>Behringer UM2
Audio interface under $50. There’s also the M-Audio M-Track Solo, but that’s $10 more on Amazon.

Absolutely. You think people are watching these people because of the game specifically? They watch them because they are either: extremely good at the game or they're very entertaining. You're not competing on the game, you're competing on skill or personality.

The game is just the medium to express your skill or personality. However, if the game is incomprehensible or boring, no amount of skill or personality will make up for that unless you already have dedicated fans who would lick your toilet bowl.

Streaming isn't a zero-sum game. Simply because someone else is doing something well doesn't mean you can't have a slice because they're hogging all the pie. You bring your own unique personality or skill to the table and make the pie bigger. But this is the same thought pattern as "muh female streamers suck up all the audience and ruin streaming for muh male gamers". People are coming to watch a female streamer, not the game they're playing, so if you're a male streamer playing the same game as a female streamer, you're not even competing for the same viewers because the game itself doesn't fucking matter unless it's a dogshit game that people can't relate to.

What does it mean to "larp" as a streamer? How does one pretend to be a streamer? Is being a streamer not simply streaming yourself to a live audience doing an activity or discussing a topic? The implication here is that simply playing games you want is not what makes you a streamer, and since the only context for what does make someone a streamer is their choice of games, then there must be a certain set of games that do qualify someone as being a streamer. So which games would those be?

this would put you in the same category of the millions of facecam streamers who go live and play league of legends to 2 viewers. you need to create and deliver a product people want to consume and just playing a game isn't enough to cut it.

no. the product is your entertainment value. not the game you're playing on stream.

>If you choose to not actively try to deliver a better product to your audience, you are not a streamer,
What constitutes a "better" product? The product in question being entertainment as you previously qualified. Anyone start to see themselves as their avatar? I probably see it more than I see myself in the mirror...

>> No.34149417

Can I have a menhera vent for a minute?
The one question anybody has to ask themselves is "why do you want to stream?" If you asked me that 5 months ago I would have said "I don't, I can't see myself ever being a streamer". But then it looked like hololive was getting ready to debut starsEN and about 3 months before tempus debuted I got a bug in my brain about applying. I tried to ignore it but I couldn't stop daydreaming about getting in, or rehearsing what I'd say in an interview about why I want to join, basically going through the whole process mentally. I'd fill out the application but always had to pause when it came to the part about past content creation experience. I've made a few videos here and there over the years but nothing consistent. Around the time Tempus debuted I decided I'd start livestreaming and build up that experience. My plan was to send in a feeler audition 3 months later, and then keep dropping auditions every 3 months. I fully expect the first one won't get any return calls, hell I don'te ven expect it to get a full watch through, but I have some hope that as I keep streaming I can get better at it and maybe the next ones 6 or 9 months from now will work. There's just one thing...

It's utterly demoralizing watching the big corpo streamers, the small corpos, even small indies, and see I'm nothing like them. They're energetic and chatty, they can laugh and scream and shout and react to things in a funny, entertaining, endearing ways and I'm here with the personality of drywall and a deadpan reaction to everything. I don't laugh or scream or even shout. The only thing I have going is that I'm okay at a certain subset of games, but those games are considered to be viewership poison. There might be people who like watching more "chill" streamers but those streamers have some kind of charisma to make them chill and it feels like I have none. Everyone says personality and charisma are any streamers selling point, not their choice of games, and every time I end a stream and see, look at the analytics and see that no one new watched I can't help but feel like I'm not cut out for this.

I've asked a few times how long it took people to get regular and consistent viewers and the answers ranged from their very first stream to a month or two. I've been dropping my stream link around for a month now and the only people that show up are still just my 3 friends I knew from before I started streaming, and sometimes just one of them and not even for the whole stream. I don't have a twitter account to do the social media advertising reps with because I can't even sign up for one. I don't have a phone capable of receiving text messages so I can't get their confirmation code thing it requires. I'm too much of a social autist shut-in to do personal marketing on discords and game communities and whatever else I'm supposed to do to get my channel name out there, which certainly isn't helping this sinking feeling of not being good enough to attract anybodies attention.

The only hope I have is if my audition video somehow gets more than 5 seconds of view time, then that'll tell me maybe people see something in me that I can't see myself.

honestly, you seem to have a good understanding of why you aren't cut out for this. while i hate to be someone that goes "well you are right, just stop", maybe that is the right move. vtubing can be a massive time sink with very little gains, which is why people always put emphasis on "hey if you have fun its all good" because ultimately thats all you can reliably get from it. i also dont want to be a "nah you just have to practice to get better" guy either because its insanely competitive out there and i don't want you to waste time when you dont believe you have the natural charisma to be an entertainer.

I'm not a good enough actor to fake enthusiasm and play a character, hell I'm barely comfortable enough to play myself when I'm streaming. again, "getting better" at streaming is a fairly dubious concept and is too volatile to be accomplished reliably and it feels like much of the factors that go into being a good entertainer should already exist within the person. theres not many 0 to hero stories of any absolutely 0 redeeming factor people making it from slowly improving, its usually decently charismatic and skilled people getting their footing and finding the right communities to help propel them up.

i dont know how much you are investing in this, but it doesnt seem rational to all in on something you know you are terrible at and rely on it to give you a better future especially in something as competitive and volatile as entertainment

Exactly. The people who post here know that, too. Fuck 'em.
I also read this place much more than I have any business doing so, and it can put me in a pretty bad frame of mind if I don't make myself take a break for a while. Just think about how much fun you have on stream and how many regulars you have. You obviously have a handful of returning viewers if you're even pulling double digits at all.
