I did anki core 6K, Heisig, studied grammar with online resources and textbooks then just grabbed some books/manga/visual novels and read through them. Been studying ~3 hours a day for 2 years and now I can watch some JP chuubas more or less comfortably, although Miko/Luna/Marine are near impossible to understand still.

That's pretty much optimal. If you hear a word you don't know and the word is important for the meaning of the sentence, look it up. JP clips with jp subs are especially helpful. Mark all eng subbed clips as "Not interested". Remove all translations from your life.

The key is to get to a point where you understand enough to naturally enjoy japanese content. After that, gradual improvement is almost effortless and it's just a matter of time.

started about a year ago and understand some 80%+ of what chuubas say and can read a lot, too
marine, miko and lina are nightmare mode
watame and koyo are good starting chuuba
okayu and subaru do a lot of rpg streams too
reading goes a lot farther and faster than just anki
