We have special names for the coins because everyone used to. The British had shillings and crowns and florins and shit. The difference is that everyone else’s systems weren’t based on ten. When they all switched to systems based around 100 cents equaling 1 dollar (or the local equivalent) they also lost all their traditional coins with the historic names.

People still used the old names for British coins for awhile after the UK finally switched to decimal currency, but the 20p and 50p didn’t have pre-decimal versions, and they changed the size of the coins in 1993 so a 10p coin didn’t even look like a florin, and a 5p coin looked nothing like the old shilling.

The American system stuck because it’s really not that hard. Especially when you realize the nickel has its value written on it and that “dime” is from the Latin for ten.

Every country used to have a unique name its coins. It’s just that every other country didn’t use a base-10 system, so when they switched they lost the old names. Also, the official name of the penny has always been the “cent”. Penny has always just been a slang term.

Back then the actual metal value of coins was important, and exchange rates were often done by comparing the amount of precious metal between actual coins. They needed convenient names to refer to the coins, and the American system is relatively simple compared to what Europe had.

It’s because Kelvin is actually an objective unit of kinetic energy inside the particles of the thing you’re measuring. At zero degree Celsius, or around 273K, there’s literally 273 times more of that kinetic energy than there is when that same substance is at -272 degrees Celsius.

The old scales were formed before we fully understood how temperature worked. “Degree” meant that it was just a bullshit figure they picked, in this case, 1% of the difference between the freezing and boiling points of water.

I American, and I couldn't be arsed to care about people dying in California over some dirt-jiggles...HOWEVER the US is one of the most important ENGLISH SPEAKING countries on the planet, currently.....and people have an absolute RETARDED obsession over cali because its where all major globally seen movies have been made for the past 70 FUCKING YEARS.
She didn't know who Freddy Kruger was....and I wouldn't have expected her to know about how Yellowstone is a supervolcano...any more than I'd expect ANY american to know that prior to the advent of Youtube.

I learned it in school and Youtube didn't exist until i was graduating high school. The zoomers are definitely less knowledgeable than millennials.

Yeah no, not knowing the planets in order is just retarded, and it seems like it’s overwhelmingly americans that don’t have basic knowledge like this.
Maybe they aren’t actually the most stupid, some other guy said Hawaiians are even dumber than Californians, but in relation to population size and internet dominance they definitely stand out the most.

Also, just because this board attracts a lot of south east asians due to the number of ID streamers doesn’t mean that everyone outside the anglosphere is a seanigger here

I VISITED yellowstone before youtube existed and didn't know it was a "supervolcano"....I just knew it was geologically active...one of the most geologically active in the US....like most people. If you were taught it was specifically a "supervolcano" in school prior to youtube, it was probably a quirk of your particular textbook/teacher.
I'm just pointing out that Cali is simply part of the "Ring of Fire", and that knowing what the particular faultlines in that state are called is extremely irrelevant knowledge outside of just that state, nevermind the fucking country. Maybe I should have been more clear, and my bad if that's the case.

In fairness "supervolcano" isn't actually a real geological term, hence why people who aren't online much don't actually know what one is. It's something made up by documentaries and YouTubers to make it seem more dramatic, iirc the BBC coined it in the 90s with a documentary about Yellowstone.
