Those are different types of difficulty. The hard modes are more about figuring out how to meet the DPS checks, while stage 2 is harder in the typical hit&run aspect.

VS managed to hook me far longer than Holocure as well. There's just more variety to the maps and generally more stuff to explore and unlock. Holocure has put a lot more work into the characters, but it still becomes stale quickly, when you fight the same map for the twentieth time in order to farm more coins. I never felt that way with VS. There was always another collectible/secret/achievement to keep me going.
