Depends. If you debut with lore like Niji and Holo does, its completely fine if they're flexible in how much of their lore or their character they want to put in to their streams.

If you make lore in the middle of your vtubing career, ala VShojo, its absolutely cringe. Especially when all you do is react content (Veibae)

With her is not just lore, but everything it seems, and I really don't get vtubers that want vtubers to be like other normalass streamers and throw away the charm vtubers have, as well as all vtuber culture.

You weren't succesful as a streamer before, or even considered being one. It's thanks to the fact that vtubers became a trend that you have that place, even if you're a 2/3view, those 20 or so people watching you wouldn't be there otherwise. Some bitches are so weird.

2. Lore prompts interesting character designs.
See early waves of Nijisanji for further details. Hell, look at the test wave of an entire class they debuted recently. Guy protagonist is NOT an interesting character design.
Followers want to feel like a part of something. Having them be loyal footsoldiers, or dedicated husbands, or lowly pigs cements an idea of the dynamic between chuuba and audience. Understanding the appropriate distance is important for both chuuba and audience. For instance, in Watame's chat you can send a superchat threatening to kill yourself and have a group struggle session, whereas someone like Petra would have you much further away, more audience members than friends. Believe it or not, there are people like me who get weirded out when a chuuba is too close to their audience.

No one is telling any of the Holos or Nijis that they have to strictly abide by their lore or their fired.
