Well...that's what the (and I shit you not) official museum of Hangul (which might as well be an annex to the National Museum of Korea next door in the same development) says about THE VOWELS, not the consonants and shit.

After Sejong, Wiji, and the rest of the Hall of Worthies got their shit together and compiled the first Hangul textbook, turns out a few of those non-vowel (only like two or three) characters weren't strictly necessary for the spoken language and subsequently have been dropped.

Did they? I know the colonial administration saw the Tonghak rebellion, recalled their first governor, thought "hoo boy did we fuck up", and tried figuring out how to advance Korean literacy and education...but exclusively in the Japanese language.

Why do you think every single Korean character in the book "Pachinko" has a Korean (often biblical) name and a Nip name they use at school? The height of Korean literary works at the time were folk songs and newspapers, both of which the Nips heavily suppressed, so it's not like there was much to work with anyways.

Isn't it the opposite? You might be thinking of the Zainichi Koreans. Very few Japanese remained in Korea post-occupation, and most of the movement between the peninsula and Japan before 1970 actually took the form of ethnic Koreans living in Japan visiting relatives in North Korea mainly and South Korea occasionally.

Then, Park Chung Hee took power and told the mostly unwashed agrarian masses: "alright let's make some fucking money you dog eating cunts--go build me 100 high rise apartments in Gangnam. No I won't reimburse the farmers who used to live there, how dare you even think of suggesting it? Oh, and start building a massive container port in Busan. Your payment is not having to subsist solely on Spam and half-washed rice anymore." Suddenly, the gooks in the ghettos of Osaka and Kobe found themselves obscenely richer than the starving Norks versus marginally richer and obscenely poorer than the average SK urbanite. What the fuck to do? Try and become activists for increased rights in a country that despises you? Go overseas to the US, grab a college degree from an Ivy or the like and run a pachinko parlor to fleece salarymen out of their earnings? Jump through an unnecessary amount of hoops to obtain a SK passport. Mind you, Zainichi are occasionally seen as traitorous collaborateurs in the South as many not only speak little Korean but more often held political sympathies towards the North, so actually getting and using the passport isn't an ideal outcome either. Your choice is basically picking who fucks you--Seoul MPD, the LAPD, or Tokyo MPD.

Korean is actually one of the easier Asian languages to learn because they made it simple. Almost all Asian languages are a clusterfuck of difficulty on their own. Chinese has Hanzi and Tones. Japanese is difficult because of Kanji, pitch accent and particles. Thai has unusual grammar and word pronunciations. Tagalog, Turkish and Arabic are insanely difficult because of the unusual VSO structure, sentence agglutination and especially Tagalog with inverse/focus conjugative markers. The only easy Asian languages are Korean and Indonesian.

Oyama Masutatsu as well. Born in Korea, emigrated to Japan, trained to be a Kamikaze pilot, war ended before he could an hero for his colonial overlords, and in the aftermath decided that he hated everything Korean and became a full-time Jap.

His chosen occupation still meant that he got to beat up Japs, though, so he still did his duty to the old motherland.

Korean proto-weebs have been a thing since Japan annexed the country in 1910, and it never really went away.

Taiwan is a similar story, actually, and Japan flat-out granted everyone on the island Japanese citizenship in early '45 in a bid to keep the island after the impending American victory. The Japanese were generally well-liked by the Chinese population there, too, primarily because the Japs massacred the native tribes that previously caused trouble for the Chinese colonists.

America did of course go 'lolno, this is now Chinese clay'.

We're still paying for this mistake today.

2. Ngoko Alus

there's also a fifth one for courtly and poetry, and is basically Javanised High Sanskrit.

To be fair, as a Malay, even Bahasa Melayu has their own level of politeness, called bahasa biasa/standard (citizen speak) and bahasa istana (royal speak).

That being said, bahasa istana and bahasa biasa aren't that different to each other since bahasa istana is more like a Malay language but with archaic words and not as abundant and different as Javanese form of language. Even nowadays, our royalties don't really speak with bahasa istana unless in formal event. All the Sultans in Malaysia call themselves as 'saya' (I) than 'beta' (we as in royal we) in interviews and informal event.

Pitch accent is nowhere near as difficult nor as imporant as people make it seems to be - you'll be perfectly understood without dedicating any time to specifically it as well be able to understand people just fine.

Also, it varies from region to region anyway. Standard broadcast Japanese has a different pitch than Tokyo japanese, which is different from Osaka's pitch (for example, often the pitch accent of Osaka and Tokyo will be putting emphasys on opposite inflections). And god forbid you drive 30 minutes form the city into the countryside.

Pitch accent matters more for the academic study of phonetics, dialects and accents than for language learners - that being the reason why the databases of pitch accent samples are often hosted by universities.

It has been greatly overblown by tards from the "Language Learning Youtube Community" who want to exploit weebs by having them susbcribe to their patreon so they can learn the secrets of speaking perfect vernacular Japanese (that they learn from immersing full time in the glorious examples of perfectly normal and acceptable speech that's anime and light novels) so they'll impress all the nips and be granted a samurai sword and a cute wife together with their honorary citizenship from the hands of the emperor himself.
