400 words a sitting is a good accomplishment for anyone that is writing for their own pleasure! That's about what I can manage to write without pushing myself beyond what I find comfortable.

Personally, when I try and force myself to write large blocks of text in one sitting, the quality of my writing falls and I have to make lots of edits or deletions. Stick to what you're comfortable with to avoid burning yourself out.

I read in the intro to "The Big Time" that Fritz Lieber tried to write 1000 words a day, and that always seemed like a reasonable goal. Liebers a great role model for an aspiring writer because he wasnt published until he was in his forties, and every year it seems more silly to think I'll ever see my name in print when I still struggle to make writing a daily habit. Fuck living without a dream though, times are hard enough without making yourself bitter like that. Fan fiction is terrific practice because chuubas practically generate content. Yeah that's why I mostly have no faith in it. I cant even network up something better to do this Friday that write a short story about a japanese duck tomboy falling off a bike. I'm fucked. You know the Comics industry in america has a lot to answer for. Pulp fiction used to be a viable way to get your name out there, dudes in the 1920s would have ridiculous stats publishing 90 fucking books before they turned twenty.

I read somewhere Upton Sinclair used stenographers to write 5000 words of pulp a day, and I always thought how ridiculous that sounds. Theres no way there was a modicum of quality control. They still have a thriving pulp market in europe, russia and japan but America is unique in that comic books killed the entire industry.

I think Lovecraft came into his own after Dagon, his early period is all bad (the ghost stories and John Carters nephew adventure series phase), his dream cycle is very hit and miss (I actually like most of it) but then when he discovers giant monsters and witchcraft he really produced most of his bangers. I never took a writing class and I never picked up any how to write books, but my instincts tell me an interlude is supposed to thematically set up the pay off of the third act. For example if I was going to write an interlude for rumpelstiltskin, the interlude should have a short plot that thematically sets up the payoff for the main story, so youd have a short about a bumbling criminal getting caught in his own scheme and coming undone.
