its 2 am and i cant sleep because i keep thinking about how unhappy i am with my art over the past week so i might as well post a ramble here to maybe get some advice now that its all fresh running in my mind
I finished picrel a week and a half ago and (beside the background which i was decently lazy on) i feel like this is just the peak of my skillset atm and theres three things im very unhappy about.
Making sketches since then have only frustrated me more about these three specific points, like the suisex i posted today or the okayu korone meme earlier this week
1. Shading with hard lines (eg clothes) how do they work and how do I make it look good? I never have the confidence to use a hard line when shading and when i do it never ends up looking very cohesive (eg: watame's dress)
2. Proper directional shading. I still have no clue how shadows actually work I just kinda depth shade and learning where to start with proper directions is daunting as fuck so I keep putting it off, does anybody know of a good resource? jumping in the deep end googling "directional shading guide" is just not helpful
3. I simply don’t like my style. I want a more paintery look (like https://files.catbox.moe/9n6k42.jpg)) OR a more plastic look (like https://files.catbox.moe/zccvac.png)), I’m too much in the middle atm. Especially when drawing faces when i try to commit to either of these styles they just end up looking awful.

I'll preface this by saying I'm very much not an artist (haven't done art reps in years and wasn't very good even when I did) but I do look at a lot of art.
For a more cartoony/plastic look it would help to commit to bigger, thicker, darker lineart, especially outlines. Notice in the example you posted the outlines of characters and objects are very thick and black compared to your thinner outlines that are a darker version of the main color (i.e. brown outlines on skin, green on fauna's hair, etc.).
It would also help to simplify your coloring. As you mentioned you have a very painterly way of coloring with many many layers of the same or similar colors which gives a lot of depth and variation. Comparing again to your example, in that each area of color is relatively "flat" with only 2-4 variations of the same color (for example on Anya's shirt there's a main midtone green, a slightly lighter green for highlights, a slightly darker green for most of the shading, and a much darker green for details and dark shadows). The only exceptions to this are the backgrounds and hair, which are still just very simple gradients.
As for shading in general, my best advice would be to just look at things (both artwork and real objects/people) and try to reproduce them while keeping in mind where the light source is and how that affects where shadows will or won't fall. It might even be useful to go out and buy a small desk lamp and various small objects and pose still lifes with those.
To do hard shading is pretty similar to the smooth shading you already do, it's just a matter of having the confidence to decide where the shadow ends. Just try it and eventually you'll feel it out. Looking at artwork of artists that do that type of shading (Shigenori Soejima, the main character designer and art director for Persona 3, 4, and 5 comes to mind) might help to get a feel for it too.
And don't worry too much if you think your artwork is shit. That kind of self-criticism is what drives most artists to improve. Especially if you do decide to change your style, it will look like shit at first. What's important is not to get discouraged by that and just keep trying to improve.

I'm not sure how much of what I just said was helpful, but I've watched you improve to this point over the past few months and I believe you can improve even more. Just keep at it.

I think really good shading requires a good understanding of color theory.
I'm not gonna act like I'm an amazing artist. I actually hardly hardly color at all these days because I've mostly given up on it. But I hope you can find some value in these resources.

I think it's a good idea to color simply and not use a large color pallet. Every so often (probably once a month for me) go big. Use everything you've gotten comfortable using and push it to expend your technical knowledge.

I’m actually dealing with some of the same issues. Actually sitting down and watching some shading and lighting videos helped me a lot with understanding why I didn’t like my shading. Dividing the whole piece into “shadow” and “light”, remembering the lightest shadow is darker than the darkest light, dividing things mentally into core, mid tone, center light, highlight, reflected light, occlusion helped me conceptualize what I was doing, even if I ended up shading in a flat anime style. Before I studied it I would always feel like things were too cartoony, unrealistic. I would sort of vaguely apply contour then blur it and it would be a muddy, overworked mess. I didn’t know how to fix it.

I suppose the best analogy is anatomy. Even with good references without some anatomy knowledge it’s hard to make heads or tails of things. Once you understand it you can make better use of your references: oh this girl isn’t that muscular so the fat pad obscures the abs. This girl is really fit so you can actually see her Asis and sartorius. This girl has a huge concavity between her iliac crest and trochanter, while this girl has a nearly perfect curve between her oblique and knee due to genetics pose and luck. With shading I would try to mimic references but it didn’t make a lot of sense and I’d just smudge everything around. Now when it’s a stiff cloth with a sharp fold vs a satin cloth draping smoothly I can see the sharp, vs soft vs blurred boundaries.

Proko has some decent videos on shading that I got a lot out of but there are lots out there. Once I had that framework really studying references and color picking them a bit was eye opening. I was very often wrong about values when it came to shadow and highlights. Just my two cents as a fellow newb drawfag. I think your art is quite nice but I think we all start to get past our newb gains so to speak after a while and things get harder

I'll approach this from a different angle. Feel free to dismiss it because a lot of people I give advice to thinks it's bullshit. Though I do ramble and maybe just pretty shitty at expressing my points in general.
What I've found most effective is approaching it not as "how to learn art" but "how to learn". When approaching things from a "this is the exact path to learn x", imo you are falling into the trap of school system learning, where everything can be learned the same way by everyone. What I've found useful instead is analyzing yourself and how you've successfully learned how to do other skills so far. Even then, different aspects if a skill has a different "click" moment for you. Its a matter of trying shit out and gaining mileage in the end, and it may not be mileage in the doing sense either, it may take you mileage of listening to different people explain things in different ways. It may be from relentless copying, it may be from just grinding mindlessly. I've experienced the "I get it" moment from all those experiences and more for different aspects of art. This is what I think "trust the process" really entails, just going on the journey and not worrying about it. If you're stuck, then try a different way because there will always be one.
Think of it this way, if you're good at another skill like math for example. How did you learn math? Is it doing it intuitively, reading the formula, listening to the teacher's explanation, inputting the formula and trying shit out, looking at a solved example problem then working your way back from the answer? The solution you've used to learn other skills can show your learning tendency and what you might be able to apply to l arming art as well. I really can't emphasize the importance of meditation and self reflection enough for learning, as weird as that sounds.
If there's one universal requirement though, it'd just be time. While people might point to someone that never improves after x years, I genuinely think that's impossible if you can actually actively think and self reflect and try different paths to your goal. Sometimes some knowledge will take longer than others, and some people are simply slower than others, but if you can actively think your way through it's hard to believe you won't improve with time.

For a more specific knowledge that's based on personal experience, I've found adopting an art parent works the best for me. Pick 2-3 source artists that you want to emulate the most as your pie in the sky, and fill some pureref file with all their art. Whenever you draw you have it open on the side to keep reminding yourself of the details of their art and break it down in your head in real time while you draw your separate art piece of whatever. But it'll almost be like osmosis and you absorb how to make better shapes, how to do better line weight, how to simplify your shading, how to simplify your anatomy. Though like >>31544402 already mentioned, it's also important for you to know the knowledge you're simplifying (or stylizing if you will, simplifying and partly embellishing complex irl knowledge is in the end what stylization is). I've picked up going to the gym regularly since I started drawing and it's massively improved my anatomy drawing because I know by heart the muscle positions and movement usage now. And exercising in general also boosts your creativity and longevity, countering the hours spent drawing on a desk.
