They take too long and generally don't have much in the way of action to keep people's attention. Skill ceilings also tend to be low, so you aren't going to see many amazing plays. Also if you miss part of it you are completely lost come next stream, and some people just don't have time to watch every VOD. So every future stream is going to have less and less viewers.

RPGs are entertaining for the player because you can enjoy the sense of accomplishment and progression involved. That doesn't really translate as a viewer, in my experience at least. So instead RPG streams rely almost entirely on the streamer being entertaining enough to make up for these downsides. I think he is, and it definitely helps that he really enjoys the game because you can feel the enthusiasm. Low numbers are kind of an inevitability for things like this. Fortunately, he's already said he's doing it because he wants to, and he doesn't give a shit about numbers. So props to him.
