It's two factors:
1) English is very free form and complex, so nobody really gets it perfect anyway, and so there's a lot of leeway for expression that "feels" right.
2) Cultural expectations. People in the anglosphere are used to people all over the world trying to use their language. People are so incredibly used to people being not as good at the language that people are actually more used to and accepting of it. You will notice this very clearly if you, say, go to Japan and try to use basic Japanese. I didn't know this about German. Basically it sounds like out of the major european languages, knowing only French or English is one of the more difficult starting points for Japanese (yeah yeah loanwards, but those don't get you far at all).
