More like they've been trying to figure out how to do real-time combat since 12 and finally decided to just bring in people who know how to do it right. 7R's system isn't bad but it lacks in mechanical depth compared to proper character action games.

Besides, you can't really call it 'giving in' to that audience given DMC and the like are a niche genre. Yoshida chose this.

As a full DMC sperg the vast majority of action rpgs are just "what if dmc sucked shit". either go for full turn based kino (what they should do) or make a proper action game, the half and half shit they do in such as ff7r is a total waste. there's a reason tifa is the most fun character to use in that game by 8 million miles, and its because shes the only character with combos and speed.

You're not wrong, but just because most developers fail to get it right doesn't mean they should all just stop trying. Giving up on party members for XVI already brings the game closer to a proper action game than any other FF with real-time combat prior to it.

Its too early to make a call on where XVI's combat will end up, but given his track record I'm gonna choose to trust Yoshida and the team he's put together.
