What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Out of these two character concepts, which one sounds better? Don't have concept art yet, so it's a bit generic.
>Laid-back, a bit sarcastic, but sometimes slips into a chaotic, shitposting type. Still, genuinely kind. Appearance-wise, a relatively normal person, has a signature jacket or hoodie, maybe a hat. Gives off bro vibes.
>Something with more of a lore-heavy, roleplaying/kayfabe focus. Personality is like the above, albeit slightly more professional, but the concept behind the character is more specific, with a story unfolding through streaming, which would make it hard to put him in other settings/collabs. Might be a kind of soldier or knight, but I also like the idea of having a gas mask involved, though it may limit expression.

Second sounds like the thing you're more invested in, perhaps the mask is too much?
I don't think lore is necessarily something that would stop you, you're on twitch, call it the soulstream or something, meeting with other planar travelers is not uncommon now is it?
Also depending on what kind of collabs you can net, you may even have a couple of lore events with other people, some small thing that's planned but that you two play as spontaneous.

Whenever something sounds silly try to explain it with credible magic and if it doesn't work then drop it.

Thinking I might just go with the first one and sprinkle in some lore here and there, going to make the design more unique. Honestly, doing lore/roleplaying events with other chuubas sounds like it could be fun, but I'd probably have to somehow get big enough to get noticed enough for that.

The normal character seems pretty stoic, maybe something like Hoshi from Arakawa Under the Bridge where its just your normal head on a more humanoid body with an ikemen face? Just spitballing a few ideas here, if it's something you're just using for fun and will only be on screen for a few minutes at a time as a joke redeem or bit then I wouldn't worry too much about it actually being conventionally attractive.

It's cyclic. There are always posters that have nothing to contribute directly and just thrive on drama and commentary. People that need stuff or want discussion stop posting as much when the former group becomes most active. Because there are fewer real contributing posters the former group repeats the same stuff a few threads and then quietens down. When normal posters notice that the thread isn't a complete trash fire they are slowly more encouraged to post, discuss techniques and tools, and ask questions. Then as the thread gets more active the other kind of poster notices and starts the cycle over again.

You can actually sort of gain an audience by playing niche games, even ones that literally nobody streams or watches. I often go to discord channels dedicated to specific niche games and shill myself there in a respectful manner. Often the people in these discords are actually quite happy to have somebody that wants to stream their favorite game and will watch, follow, and chat when you stream it.

I have gotten a few regulars by doing this, as people into niche games will often follow you to other niche games. My chat has been so much more active and interesting after doing this for a few weeks.

I've accepted that noone will want to watch me play my favorite genres of games while I can count my viewers on my fingers. Still though, seems hard to justify playing [popular game] when there are already a billion chuubas & other streamers playing it since how exactly would they find me? Listen to this, the cost of entry for vtubing is pretty high. For just a custom character ref sheet to pngtube you're looking at $100+ from most artists. Not that i know of. You can bake lighting into the model, but the vseeface stuff is kinda basic. You can use shoost for simple stuff and obs filters for some more control, depending on what you need. It served me well.

3D props probably only possible through blendshapes. I think someone told me, you can actually get Unity scenes to work in vseeface, which would allow you to put more stuff in it (like an entire room for example), but i do not remember how. I think it was through third party plugins, but it would still be very involved. I think you are looking for something more plug&play.

Twitch will automatically mute your VODs if it detects potential copyright issues. This isn't a copyright strike, don't panic, but it's a pain.
Youtube will automatically alert the copyright holder if your video is public, and they can choose to claim the money or send a copyright strike. If it's private, it doesn't matter, it's just ineligible for monetization
