Most nijiwatchers and phasewatchers are ex-holoOnly watchers. A lot of indies are old /jp/hlgg/ femanons who created their own environment. And so on.
It's not about shitting on hololive, rather the entryway role of Hololive and the idol environment makes it so people get enthralled by it. There are very few other entrypoints for vtubing and those people are very noticeable (pippa's political normies, vox's chink fujos, vshojo's twitch celebrity normies, etc).

Eventually they get tired and check others out of curiosity. Sooner or later they change from a tribe-only watching to a vtuber portfolio-style watching of select ones from a variety of environments.

I'm glad my descent was different from a typical one. It was a Korone stream of a game I really liked. When she wasn't streaming I just went on Twitch and looked the game up and watched many face, faceless streamers, and vtubers so I became a lot more open minded from the get go. Hololive is just easier to get into because it's the most popular. Now I watch what ever I want and skip any streams I don't care about and not worry about VODs. I do have a preferred company to watch, but I watch others outside of it.

In the end of the day though, Gura's growth nowadays is more indicative of growth of vtubing as a whole, because they're the biggest. The more they expand, the more the profession of vtubing is seen more legit and accepted. If Gura expand to 5M, you should celebrate it because its more indication that new people actually comes rather than the industry/genre as a whole stagnates.

I came to /trash/wvt/ with Koopa and Africat and have witnessed it all. Among myth I still watch my oshi but the rest of my time is occupied watching indies, small corpos, a nijis and HoloID. Vtubing is massive and staying to a single tribe or a single vtuber is not the way to go, as there are others that might resonate to you more or have interests at are more in line to you. But I am not alone in that sentiment, since I'm sure the inclusion of the "extended universe" is a mark that fellow members of my fanbase can enjoy vtubers within and outside of hololive.

What does need cultivating is to provide an environment that allows vtubers of more specialized or niche interests is to thrive, and for that to happen they must be supported and shilled to others who mighted interest them. It's more of a law of numbers than a culture issue, the "willing to stream" population is big enough already that outliers are out there, you just have to find them. Meanwhile holoEN is stuck with tummy hort girls.

Once I realized that a lot of the HoloEN girls don't really have any passion for streaming or any games in particular I started branching out more and finding others to fill those gaps. Seeing thinks like Elden Ring being streamed still, FoTM shit being jumped on and dropped in one stream, and actual fun collab games like Monster Hunter's new expansion being completely ignored by the ENs due to the girls being too fucking incompetent to actual play and have fun with is just disappointing.

there is a balance, a sweet spot. imagine all 11 of them do min 3 stream a week, 1 stream for fan choice, 1 stream for streamer choice incase they want to do fotm or minecraft, 1 misc stream for supa zatsudan and such, and potentially unplanned guerilla stream so even if your oshi didnt stream there is at least 4 or more other stream you can check, there bound to be at least 1 stream thats interesting for you to watch right? i assume most people only need at least 1 good stream per day to unwind a lil bit after work and the fact that there is 11 of them doing this gig semi professionally and still cant delivers is beyond believe.
